The A Team (Fra)

As the 2013 Krakow Trophy Cup Semi-Finals were about to get underway we were down to the elite 4 teams in the tournament with a strong home challenge from Cracow United and Vamos plus the travelling contenders Budapest Celtic Lions and The A Team. It was going to be tough to select a winner from these as all were looking strong.

The first Semi-Final saw Budapest Celtic Lions versus Cracow United. Cracow United was statistically the favourites – unbeaten so far and the most goals scored. Budapest Celtic Lions had tasted defeat but they had also emerged as group winners from the toughest of the morning groups. So, where's your money?

We reached half-time and were none the wiser. There was no score and we were still level at 0-0. The one thing that was clear was the first goal was going to be crucial. When that goal arrived it came from the boot of Peter Roscoe for Budapest Celtic Lions. It was a goal that would force Cracow United upon them and allow them to play on the counter-attack. The way Cracow United set-up to recover the match would help them in this.

Cracow United often brought their goalkeeper out on pitch to give them a numerical advantage as they sought a cherished equalizer. It was courageous but at 1-0 down in a knock-out game offered them the best chance of surviving in this tournament. The down-side was that should they lose possession and should Budapest Celtic Lions be able to break quickly a second goal was likely and going to kill off the game.

Unfortunately for Polish supporters and happily for Hungarian supporters it was the latter situation that transpired. It was Roscoe again to make it 2-0 and Peter Hegedus added a third for good measure.

Cracow United were out at the same stage as last year. They were an impressive team though and we are sure there is a eurofootballfives.com tournament victory in them one day.

So, who would meet Budapest Celtic Lions in the final?

The two teams were Vamos and The A Team. Both teams had impressive records so far with Vamos winning four consecutive games since opening game defeat. They were bidding to make their second Cup Final in as many years. At this stage last year they edged a close one 1-0 on Golden Goal in extra time.

The A Team was free-scoring and an attacking team. Amongst their ranks was Fateh Bekhouche who had won the 2013 Mallorca Fives with Grant THorntonjust four months ago and he was bidding to make a second Cup Final.

The A Team raced into a 3-0 lead and virtually settled the tie in the opening period. There were two goals from Dydynho and one from Fateh Bekhouche. Could Vamos hit back? They pulled one back but it was only a consolation as Dydynho added two more in the second half to take his personal tally to 13 goals for the day. Abdoulaye Coulibaly put the icing on the cake to make it 6-1 and The A Team had surged into the Cup Final in some style. It was a record margin of victory for a Cup Semi-Final in our 8 Krakow tournaments.

It was a disappointment for Vamos who would have been hoping to go one stage further than last year. They would now have to wait until our next Krakow visit to have another crack at taking glory.
