We began Round 5 with the same order of teams as we began Round 4. The top 3 teams were already decided but we did not know in which order and if all would make the Cup competition. The top two would automatically qualify whilst the third placed team would need to wait and see if they were one of the two best third placed finishers to also go through.

Cilag Team 2 and GTSC would finish their campaigns first as they took to the field on Pitch D. With De Puy Synthes 1 and JNJ Turkey still to play each other a win would guarantee GTSC a top two finish and may be enough for the Group A title if those two other teams drew. There were still many permutations should they draw/lose so GTSC just had to go for the win.

For Cilag Team 2 this game was almost academic. At best they could finish 4th with a win (and a GBS Reds A defeat) and in reality they could finish no lower than 5th as even if Leeds Two won their final game the goal difference meant that Cilag Team 2 would likely finish above them. It meant that Cilag Team 2 were destined to play in the Plate. However, this was not totally academic – a fourth placed finish would give them a theoretically easier Plate Quarter-Final and there was the not-so-small matter of pride and national honour to play for.

It was pretty even after the opening period as the two teams entered the break level at 1-1 thanks to goals from Ivica Kusanic (Cilag Team 2) and Maarten Diels (GTSC) – the second goalkeeper to score in Group A! In the second half GTSC were to claim the victory they so desperately needed as Stef Verschueren scored his first of the day to secure a 2-1 win.

JNJ Turkey, De Puy Synthes 1…..it's over to you.

Next up was that very game – JNJ Turkey versus De Puy Synthes 1. So, what was at stake:

De Puy Synthes 1 win: This would seal the English team the Group A victory, see GTSC qualify in 2nd and JNJ Turkey would need to wait and see if 9 points would see them through as one of the two best third placed teams.

A draw: This would see GTSC win Group A on 12 points, De Puy Synthes 1 go through in second with 11 points and JNJ Turkey would need to wait and see if 10 points would see them through as one of the two best third placed teams.

JNJ Turkey win: This would see GTSC and JNJ Turkey go through automatically. JNJ Turkey would win Group A on goal difference. De Puy Synthes 1 would need to wait and see if 10 points would see them through as one of the two best third placed teams.

With the match underway it was De Puy Synthes 1 who forged ahead with Andrew Preece scoring his fourth of the tournament. The English team were in the ascendency and after the interval Andrew Preece scored again to give his team some breathing space. A superb solo effort from Scott Biggs wrapped up the points as he danced through the Turkey defence before applying the finish to wrap up a 3-0 win.

Congratulations to De Puy Synthes 1 who won the Group A title with a 13 point haul which matched their efforts from Bratislava 2014. You could say this was a better effort as they had a +8 goal difference then and today they had +17 scoring 20 goals today compared to 10 one year ago. Despite defeat, JNJ Turkey also had a good morning and, as things turned out, they would also qualify for the Cup.

The final thing to wrap up Group A was GBS Reds A versus Leeds Two. With all the other games completed and the league placings already decided these two could just enjoy the game without any pressure.

GBS Reds A were guaranteed fourth place and a place in the Plate but could take some momentum in the knock-out stages with a victory. For Leeds Two, there was still something to play for – Plate qualification. Although they were destined to finish sixth a draw or win could see them make the Plate as the best sixth placed team. The current sixth placed incumbents of Groups B and C sat on zero points so a draw might be enough.

As has been documented before leaking goals had been Leeds Two's primary problem and especially in the first half of games when they had conceded five for the last 3 games in a row. This time they got off to a better start – they still trailed at the break but this time it was only by the odd goal (scored by Milos Novak).

In the second half GBS Reds A did ease away from their opponents as Novak scored a second and Jindrich Kyjovsky made it 3-0. It meant GBS Reds A finished on 7 points – their highest points tally in a JNJ Euro Soccer Tournament since their C team finished on 10 in Group B back in 2012.

GBS Reds A would qualify for the Plate, Leeds Two would proceed to the Wooden Spoon play-off.
