Drunk Perfect (Spa)

As we entered the final Round of games we started with Unbelievable Technippers versus Bolivar. Wins for Bolivar and the Shahs of Sunset in Round 6 meant that Unbelievable Technippers could no longer qualify for the knock-out phase. This would be their last game in the 2016 Barcelona Fives – could they go out with a bang?

Bolivar started the game in fifth position but had a chance of moving up into the fourth and the Plate qualification places should they win and Drunk Perfect fail to win. A draw may be enough if Drunk Perfect lost by 4 goals but would also bring Shahs of Sunset into play. If Shahs of Sunset won by 4 goals then they would climb above both Drunk Perfect and Bolivar to claim fourth spot.

The game started well for Bolivar with Diego Medina Mauricio scoring the goal that put them in front. Unbelievable Technippers hit back though and it was James Johnson with the goal that drew his team level.

The goal was James Johnson's first of the tournament and so often we see people score their first and a second comes along quickly after. That is exactly what happened here as James Johnson's second of the game turned this fixture around. Unbelievable Technippers would indeed go out with a bang. They finished with 1 win and 2 draws and it has to be noted that they were drawn in a tough, tough group. We hope they'll join us again at future tournaments.

For Bolivar, it meant they would be unable to climb into the Plate and they would go through to the Trophy – the competition they won last year.

Red Light Runners entered the final game of Group D with the luxury of knowing they were through to the Cup and had already secured the group win. They did have the carrot of making it 7 wins out of 7 games and keeping their momentum going into the knock-out phase of the tournament.

There was much more at stake for Los Swallacticos. They currently sat in third position just a point off second position but they needed a result here. If they were to win they needed Beercelona to fail to win in their game on Pitch D. A draw would be enough if Beercelona lost by 3 goals. A defeat would mean third place and the Plate competition. Beercelona had only dropped points against Los Swallacticos and Red Light Runners so you felt that Los Swallacticos needed to pull out a victory.

If Los Swallacticos were going to win it they would need to do it from behind as Stephen Doherty scored his 7 th of the tournament to put Red Light Runners ahead. The team from Ireland had only conceded twice in their previous 6 games. The team from Northern Ireland had to find two goals in the final few minutes of Group D. It was not to be as James O'Brien secured his fifth clean sheet of the tournament and Red Light Runners completed the perfect group campaign. Final score, 1-0.

Los Swallacticos, Cup finalists in their previous two outings had to settle for a place in the Plate this time around.

The final match to be played on Pitch C in the group phase was to be Athletico De Leave versus Shahs of Sunset.

Athletico De Leave's defeat to Bolivar in the last round combined with Shahs of Sunset's win over Drunk Perfect meant that Athletico De Leave would be eliminated from the tournament whatever the result of this game. It would be great if they could end on a positive note.

Shahs of Sunset still had meaningful interest in the result of this tie. They were guaranteed a place in the Trophy but could still potentially make the Plate. They needed Bolivar and Drunk Perfect defeats plus themselves to win this game. In their 5 previous tournaments they had qualified for the Cup three times and the Plate twice. Could they keep up their run of never finishing outside of the qualification places for the two top tier knock-out events?

Shahs of Sunset were involved in a five goal thriller last time out and they were to keep us entertained in this one too. Anes Jusic was on good goal-scoring form and he gave Shahs of Sunset a 1-0 lead. Jaspreet Devgun equalized for Athletico De Leave and it was game on again. Anes Jusic was back amongst the goals as he made it 2-1 and then completed his hat-trick to extend the lead to 3-1. Vivek Deva then scored for the third game in a row to make it 3-2. The win for Shahs of Sunset was not quite enough to get them into the Plate due to other results so they would play Trophy football this afternoon.

Athletico De Leave, like their sister squad, Leave It FC would leave us at the end of the group phase. It was a tough baptism of fire for both these squads but it was a high level of competition in this year's tournament (we had 3 previous winners not even qualifying for the Cup!). We hope they will join us on the eurofootballfives.com circuit again to have another crack at Europe.

The final game of the group phase at the 2016 Barcelona Fives and the 112th game of the tournament was Beercelona versus Drunk Perfect. All eyes were on the top of the table and to see if Beercelona could make it through to the Cup competition at the expense of the 2013 champions, Los Swallacticos.

Beercelona had their fate in their own hands. If they were to win this game results elsewhere would not matter and they would finish second. If they were to draw/lose then they would have to hope that Los Swallacticos failed to beat Red Light Runners. If they were to lose by two goals and it was a high score draw (unlikely but possible) for Los Swallacticos or a loss by three goals then a draw would be enough for the team from Northern Ireland.

Drunk Perfect needed a win themselves to secure a place in the Plate to see off the potential challenges of Bolivar and Shahs of Sunset behind them. A draw may be enough for them should those two other teams fail to win. A loss would be enough if the other two also lost. This was certainly no gimme for Beercelona.

Beercelona had started the day well with 4 wins out of 4 but since then had lost one and drawn one (admittedly against the other two teams at the top). Momentum can be a big factor in these tournaments and once lost it can be hard to regain. It was therefore going to be a big test for Beercelona as they fell behind to a William Nelson goal. The goal was enough to win it for Drunk Perfect.

Drunk Perfect must have been ruing their previous defeat (3-2) to Shahs of Sunset as had they won that then this win would have seen them in second place. As it was Beercelona had done enough to qualify for the Cup as news of Los Swallacticos's 1-0 defeat to Red Light Runners filtered through. Drunk Perfect would play in the Plate this afternoon.
