The
first final of the day would see Milstead versus
Columbia's Finest FC. These two teams would need
to summon one last burst of energy to ensure they
would be picking up winners and not runners-up
medals in the presentation.
Let's
look at the two teams records:
Milstead
Won
3, drawn 1, lost 2. Goals for (13), goals against
(13)
Columbia's
Finest FC
Won
3, drawn 0, lost 3. Goals for (12), goals against
(13).
If
you look at the two teams record's today there
was very little between them. Statistically, Milstead
had the edge with one less defeat and the better
goal difference (by one goal) on the day. However,
this Plate competition would be won on the pitch
not on statistics. Both teams were competing in
their first final in our tournaments.
On
the field of play it was equally tight. The first
half came and went with the teams locked in stalemate
at 0-0. We were to get goals in the second half
with William Drinkwater scoring his fourth of
the tournament and his most vital yet. However,
it did not prove to be the winning goal as Harry
Brown bagged an equalizer for Milstead. It meant
we would need a penalty shoot-out to separate
these two teams.
Milstead
had the honour of taking the first penalty which
Ed Hallam duly dispatched before Columbia's Finest
FC cancelled this out immediately. Will Drinkwater
scored in normal time and he was on target again
in the shoot-out. Fei McCabe put Milstead back
ahead at 2-1 before the first moment of drama.
Will Jarman saved Aarun Kahlon's penalty which
put Milstead firmly in control. Up stepped Harry
Brown with the chance to win it for Milstead.
He made no mistake from the spot to spark wild
celebrations amongst his team-mates.
We'd
like to thank Columbia's Finest FC for attending
and offer our commiserations for the Final. They
could not have come much closer to glory. They
earned runners-up medals in the presentation to
cushion the blow. We hope they will join us again
next summer.
Many
congratulations to our winners – Milstead. What
a fantastic debut and a great way to crown their
first tour with us. Rumours are they might be
joining us in Barcelona later in the year and
we very much look forward to seeing the lads again
in sunny Spain.
