We had 7 teams in Group B and as you know 7 doesn't go into 6 very well. It meant in each round of fixtures one team would sit out. In Round 1 that was Trilution of Portugal. They began their campaign at the start of Round 2 and would play their compatriots, Water Boy.

These two teams both played in the 2016 Algarve Open. As the name suggests, it was our Open Age event and the teams performed very well. Trilution won the Plate and Water Boy were the runners-up in the Plate. No doubt they would both be aiming for Cup glory at Veterans level today?

These two teams played out a 1-1 draw when they met back in 2016. Water Boy already had a 1-0 win under their belts and another would put them top of the table. It was Trilution, perhaps with fresher legs, who emerged victorious though. Goals for Luis and Aquino gave them a superb 2-0 victory. As things stood, they were one of four teams joint top of Group B on 3 points.

Round 2 and game 2 for each of WEEDS Youth and FC Mahou.

WEEDS Youth may well have come into this game with some trepidation. They would know what to expect from their opponents as they met in Mallorca last year. On that occasion they fell foul of a 7-0 defeat against the current title holders. FC Mahou had already warmed up with a 3-0 win today so would feel this game was there for the taking. If FC Mahou could take the win they would open up a 3 point lead at the top of the table.

Mike Brandon already had 2 goals to his name from Round 1 and he was back in amongst the action to give FC Mahou a 1-0 lead here. Steve Sachro pounced to make it 2-0 before Mike Brandon was on target again for 3-0.

2017 Mallorca Veterans Tournament top scorer Pete Cox (with 10 goals) opened his personal account to make it 4-0. FC Mahou were not done just yet as there was time for Mike Brandon to complete his hat-trick and the scoring in a resounding 5-0 win.

The game that would complete the second round of fixtures was Dickie Dogs versus Mavericks. Both teams played in the 2016 Lisbon Veterans Tournament but did not meet in direct competition. Both teams left us at the Plate Semi-Final stage on their previous visit to Portugal.

This was Mavericks second Veterans appearance in our events. On that previous occasion in Lisbon, they were unbeaten in the group phase as they produced 2 wins and 3 draws from their 5 games. They missed out on the Cup by just 1 point as they finished in third place. Today they had started off with a 1-0 win over WEEDS Youth and another win here would put them joint top.

Dickie Dogs were looking to avenge a first game defeat to Water Boy. Their preparations for this tournament were far from ideal with news that their goalkeeper was delayed on arrival into Portugal. He had to change flights to arrive in Faro on the morning of the tournament and he made it to our venue with only a couple of minutes to spare before the opening game. His presence was a valuable one as he picked up a clean sheet in this second fixture with the aid of his defence.

The Mavericks defence was also proving strong as they kept their second clean sheet in as many games. Final score, 0-0.
