AC
Motxo International were back in action as we
began Round 5. Only two points separated 1st and
6th place. The Spanish currently occupied 6th
place but could surge up the table with 3 points.
In their way stood FC Gymnasium of Portugal who
were currently in second on goal difference but
had just tasted defeat for the first time. Could
they respond?
On
the night before the tournament in the World Cup,
Spain and Portugal served up a thrilling 3-3 encounter.
If these two teams could match their national
teams we would be in for a real treat. Given the
scores today it was unlikely we would get 6 goals
but we witnessed just as thrilling a game.
It
was an evenly contested game and just one goal
would separate the two teams. It was FC Gymnasium
who returned to winning ways thanks to a Cristiano
Silva goal. Final score, 1-0.
It
was a crucial 3 points for FC Gymnasium who opened
up a 3 point lead at the top of the table. AC
Motxo International's chances of winning the Cup
just got that little bit more difficult.
Wealdstone
Raiders were heading into Round 5 of Group B on
the back of their best start to a eurofootballfives.com
tournament. They were unbeaten in 4 games, remained
the top scorers in the group and had just conceded
the 1 goal. For all this effort though they found
themselves in fourth place. 3 draws had hampered
their rise up the table a little but they were
only a point off top. They now faced the 8th placed
team in the table.
Elbersiktas
were on a bad run of form. Having secured a solid
opening draw they had lost their last three games
in a row to find themselves bottom of the table.
The form book would suggest a win for Wealdstone
Raiders.
It
was perhaps a surprise then that it was the Dutch
team who took the lead. Continuing the “I'm Spartacus”
theme it was Pieter Elbers who put Elbersiktas
ahead. The Dutch could take nothing for granted
though as they were leading 1-0 in their last
game before slipping to a 2-1 defeat.
This
time though Elbersiktas retained their lead to
set-up their first win of the day. It inflicted
a first defeat on Wealdstone Raiders. This was
the proverbial “coupon buster”.
In
a very tight group at the top, the defeat for
Wealdstone Raiders opened things up for the teams
around them. Two of those teams were now in action
as AFC Chorltonians took on Cruz Del Sur.
AFC
Chorltonians arguably needed the points more as
they had played 5 games to date so this was their
penultimate chance to put points on the board.
Having gone unbeaten for 4 games they had just
tasted defeat for the first time. To get back
to winning ways would be tough against Cruz Del
Sur who lead the table at the start of Round 5
with a game in hand.
Cruz
Del Sur had 2 wins, 1 defeat with 3 goals scored
and none conceded. Their remarkable progress looked
set to continue as Tom Lawro scored for the second
game in succession to give his side a 1-0 lead.
Having not conceded today they would have felt
confident of a third win. If they could win this
they would join FC Gymnasium on top with 10 points.
It
was not to be though as AFC Chorltonians were
proving just how hard they were to beat as they
eeked out another draw – a fourth stalemate in
6 games. Although, from a goal behind against
the league leaders this could certainly be viewed
as a good point. Lee Bagshaw was the man with
the equalizing goal. Full time result, 1-1.
To
complete Round 5 we had Men Behaving Chadli versus
Lacey Green FC. In Round 4, Men Behaving Chadli
lifted themselves off the foot of the table with
their first win of the day. They found themselves
at the foot of the table again after Elbersiktas's
victory over Wealdstone Raiders. A second win
in a row could lift them up to 5th place though.
Lacey
Green FC had started off Round 5 joint top of
the table with FC Gymnasium and Cruz Del Sur.
FC Gymnasium had moved onto 10 points with a victory,
Cruz Del Sur had moved onto 8 points with a draw.
Could Lacey Green FC keep pace with the leaders?
They
made a good start with Mark Johnson adding to
his tournament tally. His third goal of the day
put Lacey Green FC in pole position in this tie.
Tony Shadbolt went on to hit the post with a superb
snap shot on the turn but that ultimately did
not better as another solid defensive display
saw Lacey Green FC win 1-0. The result put them
second in the table.
