It
was crunch time in Group A and Round 6 started
with WEEDS Colts versus Los Amblos.
At
the 2017 Mallorca Veterans Tournament these two
teams finished with near identical records in
the group phase. Both teams claimed 10 points
from 5 games and both had a +4 goal difference.
Los Amblos finished above WEEDS Colts on “goals
scored”. It was the difference between Los Amblos
making the Cup and WEEDS Colts making the Plate.
When the two teams met head to head the game finished
0-0.
Today's
results suggested WEEDS Colts were the team in
greater form on the day and would start the game
as favourites. They were also in greater need
of the points as they were battling with FC Miracle
for Cup qualification. Los Amblos were heading
for the Plate.
The
result went with the form book in what was another
tight contest between the two teams. Ian “Robbo”
Roberts goal was the difference between the two
teams at the final whistle.
The
Warriors appeared here in the Algarve when they
made their debut in the summer of 2015 at the
Algarve Veterans Tournament. They started off
well in Group B with two 1-0 wins in their first
3 games and ultimately finished 4th in the table.
They then defeated Ashtead Vets 1-0 in the Plate
Semi-Finals before just missing out on the winner's
trophy as Norton Old Boys emerged victorious 1-0.
They
had found today a little tougher with 4 points
from their opening 4 games – the same amount as
their opponents Chorltonians Vets. With WEEDS
Colts victory in the previous game, Cup qualification
was mathematically impossible for these two sides.
They were now playing for as high a position in
the table as possible to get the best available
draw in the Plate Quarter-Finals.
An
Alex Finney goal for The Warriors meant it was
they who collected all three points in a 1-0 victory.
It
was now the turn of FC Miracle to claim their
3-0 walkover points which saw them retain second
place in the table going into the final round.
