The
start of Round 4 promised to be an intriguing
encounter. It was the two teams in third and fourth
place who were each looking to close the gap on
the leaders. We had Wealdstone Raiders who came
into the game on the back of a massive win. Following
two 0-0 draws they had just won 6-1 so would,
no doubt, be brimming with confidence.
AC
Motxo International had 1 win, 1 draw and 1 defeat
so far. They were unbeaten in the last two games.
They had rescued a point from being a goal down
in their previous game which would maybe have
given them a little boost too.
After
that big win, Wealdstone Raiders were the top
scoring team in the group but they were unable
to find a way past Isaac Barriguete Franco in
the Spanish goal. At the other Wealdstone Raiders
had been defensively solid with 2 clean sheets
in 3 previous games. That would become 3 clean
sheets in 4 games.
As
the referee blew the final whistle the two teams
would have to settle for a point each. Final score,
0-0.
FC
Gymnasium versus AFC Chorltonians was the next
game on Campo B and was a battle between the 2nd
and 6th placed teams respectively.
FC
Gymnasium, the champions from 2015 when they played
as Futeboladas, were just beginning to show that
title winning form. After a slow and steady 0-0
start in Round 1, they had now won 2 games on
the bounce. It was perhaps no surprise then that
it was the Portuguese who took the lead in this
one. Soares was the man with goal.
AFC
Chorltonians were hitherto unbeaten today after
three successive draws. They were on level terms
when Anthony Hardy bagged his second goal of the
day. At 1-1 they were heading for a fourth successive
draw. Whilst they clearly didn't want to lose
I am sure they would want to avoid the tag of
“draw specialists”.
Anthony
Hardy made sure they avoided another draw by putting
the English team 2-1 up. It marked a superb comeback
against the joint league leaders and put their
first win on the board. Could this be the catalyst
for bigger and better things for AFC Chorltonians?
The
15th game in Group B was Elbersiktas versus Men
Behaving Chadli. It was the two teams in 7th and
8th position who really needed a result. At the
start of Round 4, these teams were only 3 / 4
points off Cup qualification with 4 games to go
so if they could turn their form around it wasn't
too late. However, defeat here would make it very
difficult.
Men
Behaving Chadli came into the game on the back
of a harrowing 6-1 defeat and would probably have
had that sinking feeling when they went behind
again. The goal was credited to Pieter Elbers,
CEO of KLM, who Elbersiktas were named after.
It was an “I'm Spartacus” moment or a “My name's
Brian and so is my wife's” moment.
Tom
Marriott scored his team's first European goal
in the last game to equalize. He scored his team's
second European goal to equalize in this game.
That's where the similarities ended though. In
the previous game his goal was the pre-cursor
to a 6-1 defeat. In this game, his goal was the
pre-cursor to a 2-1 win. Matt Hogden was the man
who went on to score the winner and bag Men Behaving
Chadli's first win of the day. Very well done
to them – a great comeback.
It
was third versus sixth at kick-off in the final
game of Round 4 as AFC Chorltonians met Lacey
Green FC. Just two points separated the two teams
at kick-off. AFC Chorltonians were the team with
the advantage but had played an extra game. They
were unbeaten with 1 win and 3 draws so far.
After
2 games, Lacey Green FC were joint top. However,
since defeat to FC Gymnasium and the order of
fixtures they now found themselves down in sixth
at kick-off which very much felt like a false
position. Group B was so tight though that a win
would give them a share of top spot again.
With
top spot the motivation it was Lacey Green FC
who hit the front. Captain Tony Shadbolt, leading
by example, with the goal that gave his team the
lead. Lacey Green should be mindful that in the
previous two Group B games the team who took the
lead went on to lose 2-1. AFC Chorltonians would
dearly love to make that a hat-trick or at the
very least grab an equalizer to maintain their
unbeaten run.
It
was not to be though as Ryan Maguire kept his
third clean sheet in four games. Lacey Green FC
took all 3 points.
