Milton FC (Por)

So who would claim the Wooden Spoon in the 2010 Algarve Open? 12 months ago Portuguese side Moss Deb FC claimed the first ever Wooden Spoon in eurofootballfives.com tournaments. In this year's competition Milton FC had the chance to emulate this when they took on Whiteley VII.

Both teams had the luxury of a rest courtesy of their Semi-Final walkovers. If we looked at the group stages as an indicator of form then you would probably make the home team favourites as Milton FC claimed 4 points and a 5-1 victory although it would be wrong to write-off Whiteley VII as all their defeats were narrow ones.

As the first half kicked off there was not too much to choose between the teams and Milton FC led at the break by the odd goal in three. Ruben Simoes had yet to score in this competition but he found his shooting boots in this game and scored both of Milton FC's goals as they led 2-1. David Melsome scored his second of the day to keep Whiteley VII in touching distance of their opponents.

Into the second half and Filipe Valente made it 3-1 to Milton FC before Ruben Simoes had the honour of completing his hat-trick to make it 4-1. There was then a sickening incident when two Whiteley VII players collided leaving a bloodied nose and stitches required. With the game virtually at it's conclusion the referee chose to call time on the match. Milton FC, sportingly, checked on the welfare of their injured opponents and saved their celebrations until they were awarded the Wooden Spoon later on in the afternoon.

Our congratulations to Milton FC who played the tournament in a fantastic spirit all day and we look forward to seeing them again next year. Commiserations to Whiteley VII and in particular their injured players who we wish a speedy recovery. We look forward to seeing them again in 2011 for their 3 rd eurofootballfives.com tour….wherever their travels may take them!?!
