* Saipan FC win via Golden Goal.

We arrived at the Plate Quarter-Final stage and we would shortly see eight teams reduced to four teams. The first two teams to do battle were It's Back and FC Dad. In a strange quirk of fate the pre-determined draw had thrown together two teams from Group A as the 3rd placed team in the draw met the 6th placed team.

Going into the game It's Back had to be favourites courtesy of their superior league placing and also the fact they had won 3-1 during the group phase of the 2011 Prague Masters. It's Back did not have it all their own way though and at half-time they were being held 1-1 with goals from George Bowman (It's Back) and Stuart Leslie (FC Dad).

In the second period, Pil Oh put It's Back 2-1 up and from there they eased away from their opponents when George Bowman made it 3-1. Charlie Court made it 4-1 and captain Tom Brunt completed the scoring as It's Back progressed to the Semi-Finals 5-1.

Sadly, it was the end of the day for FC Dad (on the pitch anyway). We looked forward to seeing them at the post-tournament social and hopefully on tour again in the future.

The second Quarter-Final saw AC Lesk take on Saipan FC. AC Lesk were so far without a win but they had picked up two draws including a 3-3 draw with the team that finished third and had just won their Quarter-Final above, It's Back. Now would be the perfect time for them to claim a first victory.

Saipan FC had mixed results thus far with two wins and three defeats albeit in a tough group. This would be an interesting clash to see who would make it through to the Semi-Final stage.

Goals were conspicuous by their absence though as the teams arrived at half-time and then at full-time still all square at 0-0. With the final result a draw we went into Golden Goal extra time and if we still failed to see a goal we would go down to penalties.

Could either team step up and give it one final push to grab the goal that would see them qualify for the next stage. Indeed one team would manage to find the breakthrough and cometh the hour, cometh the man – that man was Tom Bird of Saipan FC. The Irish were now just one game away from a European final.

It was a tough way for AC Lesk to go out as in the end too many draws ultimately cost them. They are a young squad so plenty of time left for them to claim some eurofootballfives.com glory.

It was England versus Ireland again in the third Quarter-Final as Wafty Crankers met Team Also Ran. Wafty Crankers had started well but after good early form had slipped to two defeats in a row at just the wrong time. This was not the form they needed going into a crucial Quarter-Final tie. Could they turn this form around?

By contrast, Team Also-Ran came into the game on the back of a resounding 5-0 victory and would have been full of confidence. Regardless of form coming into the game the two teams played out a keenly contested first half which saw them turn round at 1-1. Shane Murphy scored his 6th goal of the tournament for Team Also-Ran but James Rowland's goal ensured the teams were level.

There were more goals in the second half as Barry O Mahoney got on the scoresheet for Team Also-Ran but the match winner was Neill Fraser who bagged a second half double to send the Wafty Crankers through to the Plate Semi-Finals.

We sadly had to say farewell to Team Also-Ran and hope to see them again next year.

The final Quarter-Final was England's Norton Old Boys versus the Czech Republic's Fridays. Norton Old Boys had started off in fine form before seeing their form slip away in the latter half of the group. Fridays by contrast has remained competitive throughout with some narrow defeats before finally finding winning ways.

The lunch break may have revitalized the Norton Old Boys team as they looked much stronger and there play resembled that of their opening games. The two teams were so close they could not be separated in the first half as they reached half-time 0-0. In the second half the forwards found their goalscoring boots. Lee Parfitt and Lukas Opatrny each scored for their teams before Fridays' leading marksman Niklas Mattsson scored his third goal of the tournament.

His strike ensured a 2-1 victory for his team and Friday's would earn the right to meet Wafty Crankers in the Semi-Finals. Norton Old Boys challenge was over for this year but have declared an interest in competing in our 2012 Mallorca tournament so we look forward to seeing them all again in sunny Spain.
