Janssen Portugal (Por)

The first final of the day would see GBS Reds versus Janssen Portugal. With eight games of football already under their belt the two teams would need to summon one last burst of energy to ensure they would be picking up winners and not runners-up medals in the presentation.

GBS Reds were playing in their first JNJ Euro Soccer Tournament Plate Final but it would be their third eurofootballfives.com Plate Final – they won the previous two at the 2010 Prague Trophy and 2012 Berlin Fives. GBS Reds also had experience in finals of JNJ Euro Soccer Tournament with two appearances in the Wooden Spoon Finals. They won both of those comprehensively – 8-0 against Belgium Fun Team (2012) and 6-1 against Leeds Two (2015).

Both teams came into the final on a roll, GBS Reds had 2 wins in a row and Janssen Portugal had 3 wins in 4 games. It was GBS Reds who struck first very early in game as Harris Vignozzi made a good solo run down the left before placing a neat finish into the far top corner – a goal worthy of a final. Harris Vignozzi then made it 2-0 midway through the first half and GBS Reds were in control.

Janssen Portugal then reduced the deficit to 2-1 when Tiago Santos's fourth goal of the day meant they were still in this Plate Final. The comeback was complete when Rodrigo Martins scored his 5th of the tournament. It was another great goal as Martins struck it sweetly first time from the corner. Half-time, 2-2.

It must have been massively disappointing for GBS Reds having lost that 2-0 lead but they went ahead again when Harris Vignozzi made it 3-2. This was rapidly becoming the Harris Vignozzi Plate Final as he finished off a sweeping move for 4-2. There was almost a fifth but Joao Mendes pulled off a good save.

Janssen Portugal came from two goals down in the first half and they were almost on the comeback trail again with Francisco Andrade having a good chance but he shot straight at the goalkeeper. How valuable would that have been? In the final stages Joao Mendes, the Portuguese goalkeeper, advanced up the pitch on a superb solo run and, urged on by the crowd, had a shot from distance which flashed wide. The full-time whistle blew and GBS Reds had done it.

We'd like to thank Janssen Portugal for attending the tournament and offer our commiserations for the Final. The Portugal team and players were a great addition to the tournament and were hugely popular. They helped create a fantastic atmosphere and it was a great pleasure to host them.

Great credit today and many congratulations go to the 2016 JNJ Euro Soccer Tournament Plate Winners – GBS Reds! They have supported the tournament superbly since inauguration and the win today was fitting reward.
