Welcome to Gdansk for the second edition of the Gdansk Tournament - 5-a-side football in Poland for our 104th tournament in Europe. On our last visit here in September 2018 we were celebrating our century so Gdansk is a special destination for us. With 14-teams assembled we were ready to kick-off the action on this bank holiday weekend.

First up in Group A was Pink Lloyd A (Eng) versus Dragon Balls (Pol). This represented a really tough start for the English team – on a stag weekend and first game up! Dragon Balls were a team technically on debut although they did have experience in their ranks as Kuba Dabrowski played for Alea Iacta Est on our last visit here.

It was Kuba Dabrowski who scored the opening goal to put the Polish team ahead. From there Dragon Balls took control as Maciek Caputa and then Mateusz Biegajlo made it 2-0 and 3-0 respectively.

It was the perfect start for the team from the host nation. For Pink Lloyd A it was a sobering start (metaphorically speaking of course).

The 2019 Gdansk Tournament was to be decided on a group basis with two groups each containing 7 teams. The teams finishing 1st and 2nd in each group would progress to the Cup competition. The teams finishing 3rd to 6th in each group would progress to the Plate competition. The team finishing 7th in each group would be eliminated.

The two teams on display in the second game of Group B would be TaHU of Finland and RAF Boulmer B of England. It was a historic match as it represented the first ever appearance by a team from Finland in our tournaments. Finland became the 37th nation to have team representation at our events.

It was the English team who took the early initiative though. Ashley Lally was the man to break the deadlock before Sam Dawson doubled the lead to 2-0. Anti Perrttuli then became the first man to score for a Finnish team in our tournaments as he reduced the deficit to 2-1. Sam Dawson restored the two goal lead at 3-1 before Harry McClurg rounded off a fine 4-1 win for the RAF team.

The final fixture in the opening round of Group A was TS Marpoli versus Alea Iacta Est.

At least it was supposed to be. TS Marpoli called in on the evening before the tournament to say they would not be able to fulfil their place at the event. It was too late to find a replacement and we therefore had to award Alea Iacta Est a 3-0 walkover win although I am sure they would have wanted to win the points on the pitch.
