With 7 teams in each group, 1 team would sit out each round. In Round 1 it was Lucanos Locos (Pol) but they would kick us off in the second round of fixtures having had a chance to evaluate their opposition from Round 1. They were up against AFC Blue Boys (Pol).

Lucanos Locos would know their opponents well and their squad actually featured two players who appeared for AFC Blue Boys here in Barcelona just 12 months ago in the form of Jakub Kociemski and Daniel Kuty. It was Lucanos Locos who struck first thanks to a goal from Szymon Holona.

AFC Blue Boys responded strongly and grabbed a quick equalizer through Marcin Zaluga. They were then ahead when Tomasz Zieradzan scored his first of the tournament. Jaroslaw Skowronski had been ever-present on all 6 AFC Blue Boys tours to date and he increased AFC Blue Boys advantage to 3-1.

Jakub Kociemski halted AFC Blue Boys' momentum when he reduced the deficit to 3-2 but AFC Blue Boys had done enough to secure all 3 points. Final score, 3-2.

 
 
 

In the next game we had Beijing Rockets who were looking to build on their first game victory. They were up against Bure Park Seniors who were looking to do exactly the same having completed a win over TNF in the opening game of the group.

 

Bure Park Seniors were making an impressive 13th tournament appearance with eurofootballfives.com. The tradition dates back to the 2009 Prague Trophy and they have been ever-present since. Most recently, Bure Park Old Boys competed at the 2022 Krakow Veterans tournament with two teams. Both teams finished their respective groups with 1 win and 3 defeats as they finished in fourth positions. They both qualified for the Plate Semi-Finals. The Seniors squad drew 3-3 with Krwiodawcy before bowing out on penalties. The Old Boys squad drew 5-5 with FC Dad's Club but fared better on penalty kicks. They went through in an epic battle, 5-4. In the Plate Final it was another closely fought contest but Krwiodawcy emerged victorious, 1-0, as Bure Park Old Boys collected runners-up medals.

 

The Bure Park team were up against it in this fixture though as Beijing Rockets chalked up a second 3-0 win on the bounce. Although early in the day, the team were looking like they could be the team to beat in order to win the title. They appeared to have goals from all over the pitch with Roberto Jover, Irving Guzman and Jamie Yates on target. They had four different scorers already plus a solid defence with Nick Kingston-Smith keeping his second clean sheet.

 
 
 

The final game of Round 2 was JK Silvertown against Atletico Funk. JK Silvertown were looking to build on an opening game draw whilst Atletico Funk were looking to bounce back from opening game defeat.

JK Silvertown were appearing in our Veterans category for the first time. They were last in action with us at the 2022 Amsterdam Sevens. Due to the rules in Amsterdam re vaccination certificates at the time, which effected a number of their key players, they had a much-changed and patched-up squad that struggled. They started off with a 4-0 defeat to eventual winners Humble Goats. They then lost 4-0 to Turn Down For Watford and 6-1 to Colonel Getafe – interestingly, these were the two Cup Finalists at the 2023 Krakow Trophy. A narrow 1-0 loss to Murder on Zidane's Floor preceded a 3-0 defeat to FC Tpaktop as JK Silvertown were eliminated at the group phase. We anticipate a stronger performance in Barcelona as that appearance 12 months ago was not representative of their quality.

It was JK Silvertown who were to break the deadlock against Atletico Funk as Steven Starkey opened his personal account. There was a sense of déjà vu for JK Silvertown though. They were pegged back in the first game having gone 1-0 up and the same was to happen here. Nick Moore scored Atletico Funk's first goal of the day to ensure a share of the points.
