Toros (Hol)

We began the final round of fixtures with Bull Fossils A versus Toros. This was the fourth game for each team. It was still mathematically possible for Bull Fossils A to qualify if they won this and their final game combined with Toros losing this game and their next fixture.

Toros only needed a draw to avoid elimination but I am sure they had loftier ambitions than that. Two wins would get them into the Cup competition. They could even do it with 4 points from 6 as long as their victory was by 3 goals or more.

A win of 3 goals or more looked quite conservative in terms of the carnage that followed. Toros were 5-0 up by half-time and 9-0 up by full-time as Bull Fossils A were on the wrong end of a thrashing. The Van Gelder's filled their boots with Max Van Gelder scoring 4 and Tim Van Gelder scoring a hat-trick – amazingly it was his 5th hat-trick of the day (spread across the Fives and Sixes). Brandon Ashley added the 8th and 9th.

It was a chastening experience for Bull Fossils A who knew they would now leave the tournament at the end of the group phase.

Purnell Youth would finish their campaign against Bull Fossils A. Both these teams knew they would be leaving the tournament at the full time whistle but this would be a chance to end the tournament on a high. Bull Fossils A had the marginally better goal difference so should this game finish in a draw it would be Bull Fossils A finishing in 5th place.

There was no chance of this game ending in a draw though. What we saw was a remarkable turnaround in form. Having lost their last game 9-0, Bull Fossils A were on the right end of a thrashing this time around.

They raced into a 4-0 lead by half-time and went on to win 6-0 by the final whistle. It was a great way for the Bull Fossils A to end the day. There was a double for each of L Gavin and George Pugh plus goals for Lee Mitchell and D Ryden.

The final game of Group B was Ladzio FC versus Toros. At the start of the round it was first versus fourth but Toros did have a game in hand. Now, that game had been played (and won) by Toros it was still first versus fourth but only 1 point separated the top 4. So, what were the permutations:

Ladzio FC win: Ladzio FC would win the group, TEDO3 would go through to the Cup with them in second place. Spider Mans & Eagle and Toros would qualify for the Plate in third and fourth respectively.

A draw: Ladzio FC would win the group. Toros would qualify for the Cup in second position over TEDO3 on goal difference. TEDO3 and Spider Mans & Eagle would qualify for the Plate in third and fourth respectively.

Toros win: A Toros win would see them climb from fourth to first and win Group B. Ladzio FC and TEDO3 would both finish on 10 points so it would come down to goal difference. TEDO3 had finished with +4 (10-6), Ladzio FC were currently +6 (9-3) so Ladzio FC could only afford a narrow loss. A 3-1 loss would see them with an identical record and as they drew 0-0 a penalty shoot-out would be required to see who made the Cup and who made the Plate. Spider Mans & Eagle would qualify for the Plate in fourth position in the event of a Toros win.

It was Toros who made the early running and they forged a 2-0 lead by half-time. Tim Van Gelder added another two to his tally as he continued to bang the goals in. That 3-1 result and penalty shoot-out was still a distinct possibility. However, Toros piled on the goals in the second half as John van Hoften and Max Van Gelder (2) completed a thoroughly comprehensive victory.

The nature of the result was a shock to us as Ladzio FC had won 5 and drawn 1 of their last 6 games in our tournaments so whilst a loss was always an option the 5-0 result was a shock. It was Toros who where Group B champions and made it a Dutch top 2.
