We were at the 2024 Amsterdam Sevens Cup Semi-Finals stage and from the 12 teams who signed up for the tournament we were down to the final 4. We had an all-Dutch Semi-Final and an all-English Semi-Final so were guaranteed an England v Netherlands Cup Final (was that a good thing just 3 days after a Euro 2024 Semi-Final featuring the same nations).

The first Cup Semi-Final would be contested by Humble Goats and WWK DB. Midway through the group phase it looked like this could be a potential Cup Final but WWK DB were reeled in by Scoop FC in Group B. Humble Goats had a 100% record today and had gone 19 games unbeaten in the Amsterdam Sevens since 2022. This was to be their 5 th Cup Semi-Final in 5 events (including the Sixes) at our tournaments. So far, they had won one, drawn two and lost one. In the two draws they progressed to the Cup Final on penalties on both occasions.

At half-time it was looking good for Humble Goats as they lead 1-0 thanks to Hidde Mamimei's fourth goal of the tournament. Julian Markvoort was also having an awesome day in front of goal for WWK DB and his sixth of the tournament levelled things up at 1-1. That is how we finished and we would need penalties in this one. One of the main reasons for Humble Goats success in recent times was how adept they were at penalties. They had won 4 out of 4 penalty shootouts in our events. They looked on course for a fifth when, after two spot kicks each, they lead 2-1. However, they were to miss the penalty that would see them through to yet another Cup Final. WWK DB took advantage and levelled at 2-2. We were into sudden death.

There were two more successful rounds of penalties and we were level at 4-4. Humble Goats hit the post but were spared when Jamal Ouled Mhand Aissa saved to keep the tie alive. Humble Goats then missed a second successive penalty and WWK DB had a second chance to win it. They didn't miss this time and sealed a sensational victory. Huge congratulations to them and we would have new winners of the Amsterdam Sevens this year.

Our commiserations to Humble Goats whose attempt at a third Sevens title was over. They left the competition still unbeaten (in normal time) in 20 matches in the Amsterdam Sevens – a sensational record. They'll be back next week for the Sixes.

There was no doubt we had the best four teams in the Cup Semi-Finals. If you have a look at the stats page you will see the four teams were the four top scorers, had the four best defences, had the most clean sheets and the best goal difference. This doesn't often happen as often a team will perform well in one particular area but miss out in the Cup. WWK DB had booked their place in the Cup Final from the first semi-final. Who would join them? It was Scoop FC against Jamaica Bell.

With Humble Goats going out on Pitch 4, it was arguably Scoop FC who were the form team in the tournament. They had started off with two draws but three successive wins with 11 goals in those 3 games saw them surge to the top of Group B including a win against WWK DB who awaited them in the Cup Final if they could get past Jamaica Bell.

Jamaica Bell would be no pushovers. They'd got all the way to the Cup Final in the Amsterdam Fives and were bidding to also make it to the showpiece game in the Sevens as well. They were second in Group A but only the 2x defending champions could pip them and, even then, only with a narrow 1-0 win at the start of the day.

The first goals in these games are often vital as it then dictates the subsequent pattern of play. Being able to defend and play on the counter is such an advantage. It was Scoop FC who struck first with Joshua Bright bagging his fifth goal of the tournament. Scoop FC had not conceded for the last two games so Jamaica Bell would have their work cut out trying to get back into this. In the end, it was a task that proved beyond them. It was a third clean sheet on the bounce and with Harry Green scoring at the other end for 2-0, it was the final nail in the coffin for Jamaica Bell.

We had to say farewell to Jamaica Bell but what a debut they'd had – a Cup Final in the Fives and a Cup Semi-Final in the Sevens - a magnificent debut! Scoop FC were also on debut…could they bring it home. They had one more match to go.
