Final
matchday of Group B and all teams had a chance
to progress to either the Cup or Plate competition.
Godalming Greens were virtually assured of their
place in the Cup unless they lost and Sherrardswood
Ladies won with a 4-goal swing in goal difference.
It was in their own hands though as they took
on Eastwood High in the battle of the top two.
The match certainly was a battle and proved to
be a niggly affair. Godalming Greens assured qualification
with a 2-0 win as they topped the group by 4 clear
points. Emma Nicholson started the ball rolling
with her second of the tournament before Alice
Sugden completed victory with her 6 th of the
tournament. A great achievement and a proud record
to take into the knock-out stage. For Eastwood
though it was not doom and gloom though as they
finished 2 nd and progressed to the Cup.
Sherrardswood
Ladies went into their final game knowing a point
against CAAF Atle “B” would see qualification
for the Plate and a win would probably be good
enough to progress to the Cup. CAAF Alte “B” knew
only a win was good enough. CAAF Alte “B” looked
dead and buried after match 3 with just one point
and bottom of the table. However, a win in match
4 and now a second successive win in match 5 meant
they qualified for the Plate and only narrlowly
missed out on the Cup due to goal difference.
Two goals from Wave Viegas, 4 in 2 matches, saw
the Portuguese side run out 2-0 victors. It proved
one game too far for Sherrardswood though as the
team that had filled 3 rd spot for so long slipped
down into 5 th and out of the tournament. Cruel
luck for them.
Ebirds
took on BA Speedbirds knowing a point was good
enough. BA Speedbirds needed a win and favours
elsewhere. Sherrardswood defeat meant this was
academic though. These teams were the draw specialists
and a 1-1 score meant both teams drew 3 of their
5 games. Goals from Vicky Moore (2 nd in as many
games) and Marie Weston's first of the tournament.
BA Speedbirds fought hard for their third draw
and a 6 th placed finish looked harsh for them.
Ebirds got the job done picking up the draw they
needed and finished 4 th in the group to progress
to the afternoon's Plate competition.
