The
10th and final game in this Cup group was a straight
shoot-out to decide who would claim the 2010 Prague
Trophy title. Deportivo had a 2 point advantage
at the top of the table meaning they needed only
a draw to collect the trophy. Whoever lost this
game would most likely finish second and have
the consolation of runners-up medals. Only a 3-goal
defeat for Arrows would prevent that with SK Zelenec
waiting in the wings.
Arrows
had to win and they came out of the blocks firing
on all cylinders and it was they who drew first
blood through John Gilham with a timely moment
to nail his 12th goal of the day. It was looking
even better for Arrows as Gilham found the back
of the net again to double the lead before half-time.
As well as putting his team in control of this
match and with maybe one-hand on the title there
was the sub-plot of the top goalscorer trophy
and Gilham now sat in second place just one goal
behind David Asamoah
When
the second half kicked off Deportivo had a mammoth
task to turn this game around. They had to score
twice whilst not conceding to wrestle the trophy
back from the clutches of Arrows. Their top goalscorer
Sebastian Menendez came to the party when he was
called upon to bring the game back to 2-1. He
then became the hero to all his team-mates when
he fired his side level at 2-2. The pressure was
now on Arrows who had to go out and find the lead
again. Time was not on their side though and in
the end time ran out on their challenge.
The
referee blew the final whistle to bring the game
and the tournament to it's conclusion. It was
Deportivo who raised their arms, raised their
cheers and produced the celebratory huddle in
triumph as Arrows suck to their haunches in disappointment
at coming so close to the ultimate prize. It was
tough on Arrows who had remained unbeaten throughout
the tournament with 5 wins and 2 draws. John Gilham
of Arrows also finished second in the top goalscorer
charts. Our congratulations go to David Asamoah
who won this particular prize.
For
Deportivo, they produced the results when it mattered
and were worthy winners of the 2010 Prague Trophy.
Our congratulations to them and thank you to all
teams who made it such a fantastic day of tournament
action. |
