G.D. Leoes da Guarda (Por)

Each team had a game under their belts to settle into the tournament. In Round 1 we had four first game winners and four first game losers. In Game 5 of the Veterans category we had one of those winners (Lucanos Locos) meeting one of those losers (3 Lions FC).

12 months ago, Lucanos Locos were making a promising debut at the 2023 Barcelona Veterans Fives. They opened up with a 3-2 defeat to AFC Blue Boys but were then off and running with a 3-0 defeat of Atletico Funk. 2-1 and 4-1 wins over Bure Park Seniors and TNF followed. Then a sensational 1-0 win over league leaders Beijing Rockets put them in prime position to qualify for the Cup. However, a final game 3-1 defeat to JK Silvertown saw them miss out by a point as they finished third in the seven team table. In the Plate they picked up a 1-0 QF win over Bure Park Old Boys before a 3-2 SF win over Atletico Funk. They met JK Silvertown for a second time in the Plate Final. The English team went on to the double over Lucanos Locos as a solitary goal saw the Polish side lose 1-0.

The Polish team had begun well today with a 3-0 win over G.D. Leoes da Guarda and were back into the groove here. Radek Kliszcz and Daniel Kuty were on target in a first half that put Lucanos Locos in control at the break, 2-0. Daniel Kuty extended that lead to 3-0 before Dan Thomson pulled one back. It was to be a mere consolation though because Krzysztof Fidrych completed a 4-1 victory.

In the next game we had JK Silvertown who were looking to build on their first game victory. They were up against AFC Shooters who were looking to do exactly the opposite having lost to Lucanos Locos in their opening fixture of the group.

AFC Shooters had already competed this season at the 2024 Prague Veterans wearing French shirts in a group that featured 3x French teams. They opened up against one of those teams (World Pinteur) and lost 2-0 before a good 1-1 draw against FC Tpaktop. There were then a couple of 3-0 losses to Les 5 Salopards and Shrewsbury Townsend before a narrow 2-1 defeat to The A Team. To finish the group they were up against the 2023 Barcelona Veterans Cup winners, FC Poloboc, and lost 7-1. No shame in that against the team who went on to win the Prague title. AFC Shooters were eliminated at the end of the group phase.

AFC Shooters were handed a really tough draw at the start of this tournament and were up against it from the off in this game. They fell behind to an Alan Sanders' goal before a Chris Wright brace made it 3-0 at half-time. In the second half Alan Sanders scoredhis second of the game and fourth of the tournament to make it 4-0. AFC Shooters had the final say though with John Domokos scoring his team's first goal of the tournament. Final score, 4-1.

The penultimate game of Round 2 was The Maulers against Community Sauna. Community Sauna were looking to emulate JK Silvertown and Lucanos Locos by making it two wins out of two. The Maulers were looking to bounce back from a narrow opening game defeat.

The Maulers appeared las year at the 2023 Mallorca Veterans. They kicked off their Mallorca campaign versus Peebles All Stars and lost 1-0. 4x eurofootballfives.com champions FC Mahou were up next as they lost 4-0. They got their first point on the board with a 2-2 draw against Wales' Ruta Uno FC. Last up was the league leaders AFC Blue Boys who had a 100% record. The Maulers grabbed a goal but slipped to a 4-1 defeat. They finished 5 th in the group and would play in the Wooden Spoon play-offs against their tour mates, The Warriors, which they won 1-0. In the Wooden Spoon final they met Southgate Ramblers. In a 7-goal thriller they lost 5-2.

In their second match in Porto they opened the scoring in a very open first half. Simon Parkinson the man with the goal from the penalty spot. Community Sauna had struck five in their opening game and were back amongst the goals here with Ed Brown and Remi Williams turning the game on its head to put them 2-1 up. The Maulers wrestled back the momentum to equalise before half-time with Parkinson notching his second strike of the game.

The second half did not have the same amount of goals as the first half but we woul get a decider. The hero of the hour was Ed Hill-Smith of Community Sauna whose goal clinched a second three points and put them joint top of the table.

The trend of Round 2 had been first game winners doubling their win tally against a team who had lost their first game. Nothing Toulouse would be more than happy for this trend to continue as they were looking to follow-up their 2-1 win over The Maulers with another win against G.D. Leoes da Guarda. The Portuguese had lost 3-0 to JK Silvertown in their opening game.

The game begun well for Nothing Toulouse with Christophe Albert-Cazamea making the initial breakthrough. It was his first goal of the day and the difference between the two teams in the opening period. After the change of ends they doubled their lead to 2-0 with David Goncalves Torres on target. The game was following a similar pattern to their opening win against The Maulers where they went 2-0 up before being pegged back to 2-1. Here against G.D. Leoes da Guarda it was Claudio Duarte that brought the Portuguese back to within one goal of their French opponents.

Nothing Toulouse were able to see out the victory just as they did in Round 1 and they joined the clutch of teams on 6 points at the top of the table.
