Polonia Limerick (Pol)

Two rounds to go and 6 games of football left on the schedule to decide the teams' fates in the 2024 Porto Super Veterans Tournament. Peebles All Stars would take to the field for their final fixture against a Bure Park Seniors team who had a game in hand.

Peebles All Stars were sat on top of the tree with 10 points from their 5 games. If they could win this fixture and post a total of 13 points then they would be guaranteed second position in the table and mean that Polonia Limerick would have to win their final two games to prevent the Scots from winning the tournament. Anything less than a win would open the door for Polonia Limerick but potentially also The Warriors and Bure Park Old Boys. The pressure was on.

Bure Park Seniors could potentially move off the foot of the table into a share of fifth position with a win of their own. They could also potentially help their sister squad in the process. Peebles All Stars were enjoying their most successful appearance with us so far and they were continuing their good form throughout the event. Andriy Moryev had been their top scorer today and he took his tally to 5 goals when he gave the All Stars a 1-0 lead at the break. So far, so good for the Scottish team.

In the second period Dom Finn rounded off a superb team move with a strike from distance to make it 2-0 and secure a 4 th win of the day for his team. Peebles All Stars had done all they could. They would now have to wait and see if it had been enough!

Bure Park Old Boys had just seen Peebles All Stars open up a 5 point lead at the to over The Warriors (1 game left) and Polonia Limerick (2 games left). Bure Park Old Boys were still in the equation – they were 6 points behind but with two games remaining. They needed to win both games and they could finish level with Peebles All Stars on points and the tournament would be decided by goal difference. They also had to hope Polonia Limerick would fail to win their last two games – but, Bure Park Old Boys and Polonia Limerick would meet in the final game so that was in their hands.

Pork Vale had risen to fifth place in the table and were only 3 points behind their opponents in this game. A win here and in the final round could still see them finish in the top half of the table. Pork Vale never really got into this particular fixture though as Bure Park Old Boys flew out the traps.

Matt Johnson gave Bure Park Old Boys a 1-0 lead before Ian Mansley made it 2-0 – both men scoring their second goal of the tournament. Nick Barnett made it 3-0 to Bure Park Old Boys and it was still only half-time. It was the most emphatic first half of the tournament and the three points were almost in the bag. If there was any doubt or any hope of a Pork Vale comeback that was extinguished when Matt Johnson's second of the game put the game to bed. Final score, 4-0. Bure Park Old Boys were now potentially one result away from winning this tournament.

That left us with Los Amblos and Polonia Limerick to complete Round 6. Polonia Limerick were potentially two results away from lifting this title. They had to win both their final games to pip Peebles All Stars to the title by 1 point. Los Amblos had two draws and two defeats to their name so far – if they could put a win in the win column they could move up to 5 th in the table.

Bure Park Old Boys and Peebles All Stars would be keenly watching on hoping that Los Amblos could do them each a favour. If Los Amblos could even take a draw, then that would be Polonia Limerick out of the title race. As it was, the English and Scots teams would be disappointed as the Polish team put in a devastating performance. Not only did they pick up a win but they sent a strong message to their opponents that they were in tournament winning form.

Polonia Limerick had met Los Amblos at the 2023 Mallorca Veterans and won 7-1. Here in Porto it was another convincing win as Polonia Limerick hit Los Amblos for six this time. Bartek Kaczorek struck the opening goal and they never looked back. Bart Baranski extended that lead to 2-0 before Pawel Maslanek made it 3-0. The second half kicked off and the goals continued to flow. Bartek Kaczorek increased the lead to 4-0 with Bart Baranski making it 5-0. Bartek Kaczorek completed his hat-trick to make it 6-0.

Not only did Polonia Limerick take all 3 points but the nature of the win would be a huge morale boost going into their final game. It was all to play for, for all teams, as we headed into Round 7.
