We
began Round 5 with so many possibilities on which
teams would qualify for the Cup or the Plate–
certainly too many to detail here. We began the
home straight with Yac Club versus Purnell Youth
1.
Yac
Club were currently in sixth position but they
were only 1 point away from 4th position and the
final Cup qualification spot. Purnell Youth 1
were currently occupying that position.
For
Yac Club a win would secure Cup qualification
as they would move up to third position and although
two of the teams behind them would have a game
in hand – those teams would play each other. A
draw or defeat would see them in the Plate.
For
Purnell Youth a win would also secure Cup qualification.
A draw would be ok if Urbansport failed to win.
A defeat could be ok as long as Urbansport also
lost and goal difference remained in Purnell Youth's
favour.
Yac
Club had been much improved in last two games
and that was to continue with goals from Max Moggridge
and Nick Pocock on target. Purnell Youth came
into the game on the back of a 6-2 win over Urbansport
but they could not prevent a 2-0 Yac Club victory
here.
Next
up was Bar Maruru versus Burritos. Bar Maruru
currently had a 3 point lead at the top of the
table so just needed to avoid defeat to guarantee
the Group A victory. Burritos were currently in
second and could go level on points with their
opponents if they could take the win. However,
Bar Maruru's goal difference of +11 compared to
Burritos' +2 meant it would take a massive win
for Burritos to win the group.
Yac
Club's win in the previous game meant Burritos
were assured of third place as a minimum but they
would dearly love a second placed finish to give
them a theoretically easier route to the Cup Final
in the knock-out phase.
Bar
Maruru were the top scoring team in the group
with 13 goals and their hunger for goals showed
no respite here. The goals continued to flow with
Manuel Galvan Sastre scoring his fifth of the
day to put his team 1-0 up. Fran Medina Garcia
was on target again to make it 2-0. Manuel Galvan
Sastre only scored 1 at the 2018 Mallorca Fives
in May but he was stepping it up here in September.
He moved to 6 for the day as he wrapped up a 3-0
win.
The
result confirmed Bar Maruru as Group A winners
– congratulations to them. Burritos would join
them in the Cup.
To
conclude Group A then was the not-so-small matter
of the fixture between Fiorentina Turner 2 and
Urbansport. With all the other games completed
these two teams knew exactly what was required
of them.
Fiorentina
Turner 2 had drawn-won-lost-drawn. That one defeat
was to the Group A winners and they could go up
to second position with a victory here. A draw
would see them finish in third place on 6 points.
Defeat would see them slip to fifth position and
drop into the Plate.
Urbansport's
form had been drifting. They took 4 points from
the first 6 on offer before suffering defeats
to the two bottom teams (at the time they played
them). Their most recent defeat was 6-2. However,
a win here would see them climb above their opponents
and qualify for the Cup. A draw or defeat would
see them go through to the Plate.
Urbansport
had to win and they forged ahead through Domingo.
Matt Hanson levelled it up at 1-1. Pascugi put
Urbansport 2-1 up but Matt Hanson was on hand
to level it up again at 2-2. If the game ended
this way it would be Fiorentina Turner 2 in the
Cup and Urbansport in the Plate.
The
fifth and decisive goal in the match turned that
on its head though. Abrahan's goal meant they
would go ahead for a third time. They would stay
ahead this time. It would be they who would qualify
for the Cup and Fiorentina Turner 2 drop down
into the Plate. Very fine margins.
