We were at the 2024 Krakow Trophy Cup Semi-Final stage and from the 12 teams who started the day we were down to the final 4. Any 4 of the teams looked capable of victory. We had two previous eurofootballfives winners – Ball Bashers & Big Time Krakow plus two former Cup runners-up (Cruz Del Sur & Sporting Armada).

Up first was Cruz Del Sur versus Big Time Krakow. Cruz Del Sur came into the knock-out phase as the #1 ranked team from the group phase – highest points tally, most goals scored, only unbeaten team, best defence and, naturally, the best goal difference. They were looking to reach a second eurofootballfives.com Cup Final. Big Time Krakow had a lesser record on the day but they knew how to get over the line in these events having won the 2017 Krakow Trophy, 2019 Gdnask Tournament and the Plate competition here last season.

The Semi-Final began with Cruz Del Sur applying significant pressure. Despite their dominance in the first half, including numerous chances they just couldn't put the ball in the back of the net. Even 9-goal Sam Cassidy was unable to break the deadlock. The teams went into the break level at 0-0 with Big Time Krakow still in this tie.

The second half saw Big Time Krakow capitalize on a counter-attack. Early in the period, Reda Hocine raced free to slot the ball inside the right-hand post and byond Hamilton's despairing dive. Big Time Krakow had a crucial 1-0 lead. Big Time Krakow sat in and tried to hold Cruz Del Sur at arm's length. They withstood a barrage of attacks as their defence held firm – even more remarkable as they were forced to change goalkeepers at half-time due to a finger injury. Despite Cruz Del Sur's substantial efforts, they could not find an equalizer.

The result was a harsh exit for Cruz Del Sur, who had remained unbeaten throughout the group phase but were eliminated from the Cup competition with just one loss. The silver lining for Cruz Del Sur came in the form of individual glory for Sam Cassidy, who won the golden boot for his tournament-leading nine goals. However, this personal achievement was cold comfort as Cruz Del Sur's tournament ended prematurely.

In the highly anticipated 2nd Cup Semi-Final, Ball Bashers met Sporting Armada in a match that promised intense competition with a spot in the final on the line. Ball Bashers were hunting down a second eurofootballfives.com title but had seen their form hit a dip as the day progressed. They had won their first two games convincingly (both 3-0) before 4 points from a possible 9 at the end of the group phase. Worryingly for them they had fallen behind in all of those games although had recovered the situation on two of those occasions. If nothing else, it showcased their powers of recovery.

For Sporting Armada, it had been a pretty special day so far with 4 good wins out of 5. The only blemish being a defeat to Group B winners, Cruz Del Sur. Sporting Armada had reached the Cup Final of the 2022 Amsterdam Fives and were bidding to reach a second final and hopefully go one step further this time. They faced the challenge of competing with a squad of just seven players on a sweltering day, against the younger legs of Ball Bashers.

The match kicked off with high intensity and Ball Bashers' Mati Ortiz made his mark early. Scoring his sixth goal of the tournament, Ortiz put Ball Bashers 1-0 up. Sporting Armada, not to be outdone, equalized before halftime through Tom Vivian, marking his first goal of the tournament and what a time to get it - to keep his team in contention. Half-time, 1-1.

As the second half unfolded, the match remained finely balanced. Ball Bashers' determination to secure a final spot saw them push forward, and their efforts were rewarded when Ben Williams scored the decisive goal. Williams' strike gave Ball Bashers a 2-1 lead that they managed to hold onto until the final whistle.

Despite their valiant effort and the challenge of playing with a limited squad in harsh conditions, Sporting Armada fell just short. Ball Bashers' victory secured their place in the Cup Final, setting up what promised to be an exciting conclusion to the tournament.
