JNJ High Wycombe (Eng)

The 23rd June 2018 was the date that saw the seventh annual JNJ Euro Soccer 5-a-side Tournament kick off in the wonderful city of Budapest.

The previous JNJ Euro Soccer Tournaments have produced some sensational football. JNJ Croatia won the inaugural tournament in Prague 2012 which now seems just a distant memory! On our last visit to Budapest in 2013 it was JNJ Russia who tasted success for the first time.

There was English joy in Bratislava 2014 when JNJ High Wycombe A emerged successful. Switzerland's Cilag Team made an impressive debut when they lifted the trophy aloft in Prague 2015 before JNJ Russia became the first team to win a second title as they took the glory in Krakow 2016.

Last year in Bratislava, Cilag Team made a successful return to action and claimed their second title and equal JNJ Russia's record. Who would reign supreme in 2018?

The first two challengers to get us underway in Group A on Pitch A this year would be DePuy Synthes Switzerland (Swi) versus Nordic Vikings (Scand). Both teams were on debut and so they had a blank canvas upon which to paint their footballing artistry. Let the games commence……

It was the Swiss who struck first with Jemba Bull scoring his team's first goal in eurofootballfives.com competition. It was not long before Nordic Vikings had theirs. Jesper Bilde the man to score. The opening game would not end in a draw though as Amadeus Zarbock ensured his team would take all 3 points as he claimed the winner.

Game 2 of Group A was the contest between Beeston Operation Leeds and Klopp & Co representing Belgium.

The first phase of the 2018 JNJ Euro Soccer Tournament would be decided upon a group basis. There were two groups with 7 teams in each group.

Each team would play each other team in their group once and therefore 6 group games. After which, depending on position, they would progress to the Cup or Plate competition.

The teams finishing 1st through to 4th in each group would progress to the Cup competition. This was to be played as a knock-out phase with Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and Final.

The teams finishing 5th through to 7th in each group would progress to the Plate competition. This would be played as a knock-out phase with Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and Final.

These two teams would hope to get off to a fast start and it was Beeston Operation Leeds who flew out the blocks. Harry Jones scored an early goal for them. The English team retained that lead until half-time. Dave Gregory, goalkeeper for Beeston Operation Leeds, kept his clean sheet until the full time whistle as his team started off with a fine victory.

The final two teams to play in Group A, Round 1 were EDC1 and JNJ High Wycombe. EDC1 from Ireland made their debut at the 2017 tournament in Bratislava which was the only time in the history of this event that JNJ High Wycombe have not appeared at the tournament. These teams would get their first look at each other early in today's proceedings.

It was JNJ High Wycombe who flew out of the blocks. They opened up a solid 2-0 lead by half-time. In the second period they really pulled away from their opponents as the three points were safely secured.

The chief architect of the victory in a goal-scoring sense was Rob Buckland who bagged himself a hat-trick. A great personal start for him. Nigel Mpofu and Angad Mathews were also on target for the English team as they scored 5 goals without reply.

At the other end, JNJ High Wycombe were defensively sound as Will Frempong and his defence secured a clean sheet for their efforts.
