The
first final of the day would see Sesimbassa and
Warranty Direct come head-to-head to lift the
2010 Barcelona Fives Plate Title.
This
was going to be a tough match to call. Sesimbassa
were arguably the form team having one their last
four games scoring 13 goals along the way. Their
only defeat of the day was a long and distant
memory at 10.30 this morning. Warranty Direct
though had shown great spirit, determination and
skill all day though and their Golden Goal victory
against Hebden Bridge was testimony to the fact
they would be a tough nut to crack.
The
teams did indeed prove evenly matched and played
out a keenly contested first half which saw the
goals shared and a 1-1 scoreline. Jordi Hernandez
scored his 5 th of the day but Chris Fajer's second
of the tournament meant we were deadlocked. With
time running out and the watching spectators investing
more and more in the outcome of this final there
came two decisive moments which were to swing
this final.
The
game had a goal and a sending off to make sure
no-one watching left this game. In an otherwise
tough but fair game Sesimbassa goalkeeper Andreu
Xufre saw the red mist and then a red card as
he took an unnecessary swipe at David Payne who
was a constant threat throughout. After much debate
and remonstrations Xufre had to leave the field
and the Spanishwould have to play the remainder
of this final with just 4 players. The extra man
was a huge boost to Warranty Direct and they took
full advantage as David Payne (who else?) bagged
the all important winning goal to send his team
crackers at the full time whistle. Both teams
shook hands at the end of the game and all was
well with the world again.
