We were down to our final 4 teams in the Plate competition. The first Semi-Final would see 2021 Barcelona Fives Plate Winners, FC Maroon versus 2020 Warsaw Tournament Plate Winners, FC Dad.

The game was a derby match between the two touring sister squads. We usually say it is not often teams from the same club meet in eurofootballfives competition but in this case it was just two seasons ago the two clubs met. It was also in a Plate Semi-Final at the 2021 Barcelona Fives. When teams from the same club meet it can often has a strange atmosphere – sometimes the games can lack a little intensity or sometimes the games can have a bit too much intensity with players determined not to lose to their tour-mates. The results of these games can sometimes come down to “who wants it more” to use a lazy Alan Shearer cliché.

One thing was for sure that FC Dad/FC Maroon would have a team in yet another European final. By our reckoning this would be a 10 th European final across the FC Dad/Maroon/Sharks squads.

FC Maroon won that Semi-Final in Barcelona 2-0 with a brace from James Smith. Smith was not in the squad for Amsterdam but FC Maroon triumphed again with the exact same score, 2-0. Goals from Max Hill and Rohan Hope either side of the break ensured that it would be FC Maroon heading into the final and looking for a second Plate win in three years.

So who would meet FC Maroon in the Plate Final? The two teams set to do battle were Fog Lane Albion and FC Kicks.

The match was evenly contested, with both teams displaying their determination to progress. The first half saw Fog Lane Albion take a 1-0 lead, heading into half-time with the advantage but FC Kicks fought back in the second half and found the equalizer through Joost Ropen, leveling the score at 1-1.

With the match deadlocked, the contest proceeded to a penalty shootout to determine the winner. Fog Lane Albion displayed composure and accuracy from the spot, converting all three of their penalties through Matt Bates, Sam Rankin-Costello, and Will Holder-Wood.

FC Kicks started strongly, successfully converting their first two penalties. However, Fog Lane Albion's goalkeeper, Joe Ferrelly, proved to be the hero as he made a crucial save on the sixth penalty, denying FC Kicks the opportunity to level the shootout.

With Ferrelly's save, Fog Lane Albion emerged victorious and booked their place in the final of the Plate competition.

We sadly had to say farewell to FC Kicks. A good day's performance and we hope to see them again next year for a hat-trick of Amsterdam Sixes campaigns.
