So,
the last game on the field in Group B would be
E Block Europe versus FC Maroon.
The
final Plate qualification place was at stake for
these two teams. E Block Europe's requirements
were simple – win and go through otherwise they
were out. FC Maroon only had to avoid defeat to
clinch fourth place for themselves.
The
first half saw FC Maroon take the lead through
Lewis Hope, giving them a 1-0 advantage heading
into halftime. FC Maroon continued to assert their
dominance in the second half, with Robbie Todd
doubling their lead to make it 2-0. At this stage,
FC Maroon were well on top and looked like they
could score for fun.
FC
Maroon appeared poised to extend their lead further
when Ed Cotter made a surging run down the right
flank and delivered a cross, setting up Max Hill
for a tap-in opportunity. However, Hill's attempt
was thwarted by an impressive save from the E
Block Europe goalkeeper. This incident, following
Robbie Todd's earlier stolen goal, added to the
amusement and mirth of the FC Maroon camp at the
expense of their captain.
The
miss could have proved costly as E Block Europe
refused to go down without a fight. Adam Hawkes
found the back of the net, reducing the deficit
to 2-1 and setting up a tense finale. However,
FC Maroon had done enough to secure the victory
and held on until the final whistle. FC Maroon's
triumph confirmed their place in the knockout
phase, capping off a successful group stage campaign.
E
Block Europe, although their journey in the tournament
ends here, can reflect on their performances and
build for future opportunities. It was great to
meet the team and they were a pleasure to host.
