After 35 games of football we came down to the big one. Game 36 – The 2023 Amsterdam Sixes Cup Final.

The two teams set to do battle for the honour and glory of victory represented Wales and the Netherlands. It was The Shepherd's Arms versus Summerhouse. Both teams were on debut and breaking new ground with every step of progress. Summerhouse were looking to become the third Dutch winner of this event in 5 years. The Shepherd's Arms were bidding to become the first Welsh tournament winners in our history dating back to 2007 and adding up to 129 tournaments. This was their chance to go down in the record books.

Let's have a look at the two team's record to preview the action:

We might look at the group phase for a bit of a clue. The two teams met at the end of Group B and played in a thrilling match. The Shepherd's Arms raced to a 3-0 leadbefore being pegged back to 3-2. If this Cup Final was half as good we'd be in for a classic.

Throughout the game, both The Shepherd's Arms and Summerhouse displayed skillful play, determination, and strong defensive performances. The teams fought relentlessly to find a breakthrough, but the opposing defenses held firm, denying any clear-cut goal-scoring opportunities.

The match continued with intensity, with both sides showcasing their tactical acumen and resilience. Despite their best efforts, the final whistle blew with the scoreline remaining 0-0. This was a huge surprise given the two teams boasted the top two goalscorers in the tournament. Despite the lack of goals the game was still captivating and dramatic.

The goalless draw meant that the Cup Final would be decided by a penalty shootout. Summerhouse would have the honour of taking the first penalty. Wilner Leijgraaff with 7 goals in tournament play struck the ball hard towards the top left corner and in off the underside of the bar. Up first for The Shepherd's Arms was Andrew Payne who also struck it well and into the cross-bar but he got too much on it and it rebounded to safety. Advantage Summerhouse. That advantage did not last long as Ammaar Shoaib went for the top right corner but it was too high and a little wide and it was game on again. Goalkeeper Areeb Shoaib came to Ammaar's rescue when he saved Charley Charman-Hitchings penalty which was struck down the centre of the goal. It meant that Mika had the chance to win it for his side. He had 5 goals in tournament play and he was to see the net ripple again as his penalty to the bottom left corner won the 2023 Amsterdam Sixes title for his team.

The Shepherd's Arms and Summerhouse can both take pride in their performances, as they showcased their abilities throughout the tournament and reached the pinnacle of the competition. The evenly matched nature of the final highlighted the strength and competitiveness of both teams.

We offer our consolations to The Shepherd's Arms who were absolutely superb on the day and put in a stunning effort. Wales can be very proud of their efforts. Their was some consolation for Tomos Reed who picked up the top goalscorer award with 8 goals so very well done to him on a personal level.

Our congratulations go to Summerhouse – 2023 Amsterdam Sixes Champions! It was a great victory and a sensational way for them to announce themselves on the eurofootballfives.com scene. They were worthy winners and we invite them back next year to defend their title.

Thank you to all the teams who competed – it was a fantastic day. We hope to see you all again at another eurofootballfives.com tournament very soon.
