The 9th July 2022 would be a memorable moment in eurofootballfives.com history as it would mark our first ever Sevens tournament. After 119 successful Fives & Sixes events in Europe dating back to 2007 it was great to add this Sevens event to our programme. The tournament proved to be our fastest selling event when it went on sale for 2020. However, we had to wait an extra 2 years due to the pandemic so it was fantastic to finally get the action underway.

The first teams in action in Group A were Humble Goats (Hol) and JK Silvertown (Eng). Humble Goats were on debut and as such were an unknown quantity but JK Silvertown were familiar with our Amsterdam events having appeared here twice before in the Fives competition. We will preview them in more detail as we progress with this report.

It was the home team and debutants that got off to a flyer in this game as Reuben Tetteh had the honour of scoring his team's first goal in eurofootballfives.com competition. Humble Goats then extended that lead to 2-0 thanks to Jihad L'Merrouni and they sat in a comfortable position at the half-time break. Jazz Prins and Jihad L'Merrouni added to the scoring in the second half as the men from Amsterdam secured all 3 points, 4-0.

It was a tough opening game for JK Silvertown but the beauty of the 6-team group is that there was plenty of games left to make their mark on this tournament.

 
 
 

The first phase of the 2022 Amsterdam Sevens would be decided on a group basis with two groups of 6 teams. Each team would play each other team in their group once and therefore 5 group games. After which, depending on position, they would progress to the Cup or Plate competition.

The teams finishing 1st and 2nd in each group would progress to the Cup competition. This would be played as a knock-out phase with Semi-Finals and Final. The teams finishing 3rd and 4th in each group would progress to the Plate competition. This would be played as a knock-out phase with Semi-Finals and Final. The teams finishing 5th and 6th in each group would be eliminated.

The next teams in action in Group A were Colonel Getafe (Eng) and Murder on Zidane's Floor (Hol). Both teams were on debut and so they had a blank canvas upon which to paint their footballing artistry. Let the games commence……

Colonel Getafe were the brighter of the two teams in the first half and they got their reward for their display. It was Teddy Hanifan who opened the scoring it what was the only goal of the first half. There was no addition to the scoring after the break as the English team closed the game out for the win. For Murder on Zidane's Floor it was a decent performance but, alas, no points to show for their efforts.

 
 
 

The final fixture in the opening round of Group A was a match between two teams who had made 1 previous appearance at our events. FC Tpaktop were fresh from the 2021 Barcelona Fives and were up against Turn Down For Watford who had appeared at the 2019 Alicante Tournament.

Turn Down For Watford made their debut with us at the 2019 Alicante Tournament. In the opening game of Group C they lost 1-0 Fylde Old Boys before finding their feet with a whopping 9-0 win over Brewin Dolphin B (a full 5 goals more than any other team managed against the same opponents). They defeated Tunisia's GAT Assurance 2-0 before drawing 0-0 with Panadero Local Sport (Group C winners). A 2-0 defeat against Elysian FC in the final group game saw them miss out on Cup qualification. In the Plate Quarter-Finals they were eliminated by Madrid's AC Motxo International, 3-2.

They would get off to a winning start here in Amsterdam with Jase Opoku Afriyie opening the scoring in the first half. Turn Down For Watford kicked off the second half with that 1-0 lead still in tact and went on to build on that lead. Rich Lyons made it 2-0 before Jase Opoku Afriyie put the game to bed with his second of the game. Final score, 3-0.
