The climax of the day's events had arrived - The 2022 Amsterdam Sevens Cup Final.

Whilst those teams who had battled hard yet already departed could enjoy a nice cool beer, the BBQ and enjoy the spectacle of the tournament climax there was still work to do for our two finalists. What a Cup Final we had in prospect!

The two teams;

The Gentleman's Club

Played 6, Won 4, Drawn 1, Lost 1.

Group finish: 2nd.

Goal difference: +4 (9-5)

Top goalscorer: David Aderkoa (4)

Unbeaten Run: 4

Clean Sheets: 2

The Humble Goats

Played 6, Won 4, Drawn 2, Lost 0

Group finish: 2nd.

Goal difference: +10 (11-1)

Top goalscorer: Raphael Antonio Olivero Hernandez (5)

Unbeaten Run: 6

Clean Sheets: 5

Both these teams had come through extremely tight semi-finals showing what a competitive and well-matched tournament we had today. It would be a brave person to pick the winner of this match.

As the stakes had got higher in the tournament the goals seemed to have dried up. With just one goal in the Cup so far (contrast with the Plate that had 16 goals) we were destined for another Cup Final to settle matters after the match finished 0-0 in regulation time.

Our inaugural Fives competition was settled by a last-minute decider at the 2007 Krakow Trophy. Our inaugural Sixes competition here in Amsterdam in 2017 was decided by penalties as would our inaugural Sevens tournament.

Humble Goats had practice of penalties in their semi-final and they would select the same penalty takers and the same order for the final. Why change a winning formula? They would shoot first and it was Guillermo Darson who stepped forward. He struck it firmly into the bottom right hand corner for 1-0. David Aderkoya was first up for The Gentleman's Club. He went the other way but goalkeeper Hidde Makimel dived to his right and made a vital save.

Jazz Prins was up next and he struck his penalty bottom left to make it 2-0. Marius Segers had to score and he did to make it 2-1. This gave captain Deyae El Kanfoudi the chance to win the title. His penalty nestled in the bottom left corner and he was engulfed by his team-mates as Humble Goats celebrated in style.

We would like to congratulate The Gentleman's Club on a superb performance over the course of the tournament and commiserations on missing out in the Cup Final. They would collect runners-up medals in the presentation as reward for their efforts today.

Congratulations to our champions – Humble Goats - they became the first ever winners of our Sevens event. It was a great win and a huge well done to them as they were worthy winners.
