The 2024 Amsterdam Fives knockout phase was upon us and we began with the Plate Semi-Finals. This was for the teams who finished third and fourth in each group. The first semi-final would be contested by Argon'ze A and Hosting Threesams as France met England.

Argon'ze A were appearing in their second Plate Semi-Final. Their previous appearance was at the 2017 Mallorca Fives when they went out to Dutch team, Mannenliefde. The game started with a high tempo, as both teams sought to gain the upper hand. Hosting Threesams struck first, with Sam Treon finding the back of the net, giving his team a 1-0 lead at halftime. Argon'ze A struck back in the second period when Jean-Loup Ezvan scored a crucial equalizer, making it 1-1. However, the parity didn't last long as Oliver Cobb restored Hosting Threesams' lead with a fine finish, putting them 2-1 up.

Argon'ze A, undeterred, kept pressing and were rewarded once again when Allan Goerke netted the equalizer, bringing the score to 2-2. The match was finely poised as the final whistle blew, and it was clear that the contest would be decided by penalties. Argon'ze A stepped up to take the first penalty. Jean-Marie Anar scored confidently to put the French ahead. Sam Davies Udina for Hosting Threesams had his shot saved brilliantly by Ali Daoudi, giving Argon'ze A an early advantage. Adam Mharzi stepped up next for Argon'ze A and scored, increasing their lead to 2-0. Oliver Cobb managed to keep Hosting Threesams in it by scoring their first penalty. Alann Goerke took the decisive penalty for Argon'ze A and made no mistake, sealing the win with a final score of 3-1 in the shoot-out.

So who would meet Argon'ze A in the Plate Final? The two teams set to do battle were AFC Blue Boys and Tilbury Douglas.

AFC Blue Boys came into the game with the better record of 3 wins out of 5 and 9 points in the group phase, finishing third. However, fourth placed in Group A, Tilbury Douglas, had only lost once (compared with 2 defeats for AFC Blue Boys) and were proving hard to beat. Too many draws had prevented them finishing higher up the table.

Tilbury Douglas were on debut so breaking new ground with every step forward in this event. AFC Blue Boys were appearing in their fourth Plate Semi-Final in our events. The first one they were successful at the 2021 Barcelona Fives when they defeated 2018 Amsterdam Fives champions Epsilon Rovers, 3-0. Their last two Plate Semi-Finals had ended in defeat though at the 2023 and 2024 Mallorca Fives. They would be hoping to put that run to an end here.

It didn't begin well for AFC Blue Boys as they slipped behind to Josh Park's fourth goal of the tournament. The second half kicked off with the score still at 1-0 and the game in the balance. Tilbury Douglas took a big step forwards to the Plate Final when Sonny Richardson made it 2-0. When 2-0 became 3-0 AFC Blue Boys knew their tournament was ending.

Tilbury Douglas marched on and would need one last push to secure success in the Plate.
