The
first final of the day would see Wilhelmus and
Room 20 come head-to-head to lift the 2012 Amsterdam
Fives Plate Title.
Who
would emerge victorious? Well, we could look at
their previous encounter in the group stage to
give us a clue. On that occasion a closely contested
game was decided in a frenetic few minutes when
Room 20 scored three goals in quick time which
put them on their way to victory. That was the
group stages though and it meant nothing now.
With
six games of football already under their belt
the two teams would need to summon one last burst
of energy to ensure they would be picking up winners
and not runners-up medals in the presentation.
The game itself was relatively sedate in the opening
half as the amount of football and the Amsterdam
sun was taking its toll on some tired legs and
bodies. We reached half-time all square at 0-0
just as we were in the group game earlier in the
day.
When
the first goal came it was following a Room 20
corner. The English team had thrown men forward
in search of a goal but they were caught on the
break as Tomas Price coolly finished past the
Room 20 goalkeeper. We were then back on level
terms when a Josh Swallow corner was headed in
at the back post by Calum Hopkins – his third
goal in two games at the business end of the tournament
and his goals were proving vital. It was a fine
downward header past the goalkeeper at the back
post.
Room
20 were not level for long though as Tomas Prince
scored his second of the game almost immediately.
It was another fine finish on the turn with a
left foot strike into the bottom corner of the
goal. It was heartbreaking for Room 20 who had
worked so hard to get back level. The goals had
come so late in the game that virtually as soon
we kicked off the final whistle went and it was
all over.
We
send our congratulations to Wilhelmus for a fine
win and turning two Plate Semi-Final defeats (2009/2010)
into Plate Final glory in 2012. Our commiserations
go to Room 20 - they should not be too down though
as they added a great deal to this tournament
and sure success will come to them in future tournaments.
