Rovers United were making their debut and it was certainly going to be a baptism of fire when they drawn against a team who had made 3 Cup Finals in 3 attempts – Athletico Do Hollande.

Athletico Do Hollande will no doubt be favourites for the tournament as they compete in their second Amsterdam Fives following two tours to Portugal and the Algarve Open. In the 2010 Algarve Open, they became the first Dutch team to win a eurofootballfives tournament and they then became the first team to retain a title when they won the 2011 Algarve Open despite a very strong field that contained no less than 5 previous winners. In Amsterdam last year they fell at the final hurdle 4-1 to Inter Women. Can they claim their first home title in 2012?

They started pretty well in that goal as they raced to a 3-0 lead and then further kicked on in the second period to secure a fine 5-0 victory. Goals were shared around with Jerrel Fraenk (2), Edson Lopes Tavares (2) and Gilliano Tollaway all on target.

We often preview debut teams by saying we don't know much about them but would know more after the first game. It's tough to apply that here as so many teams have been beaten by Athletico Do Hollande it is hard to make a measure of Rovers United performance. Rovers United would be relieved to know all games wouldn't be this tough though!

Match 2 saw Missing Magpies versus RFM. Missing Magpies are a new team but have eurofootballfives.com experience amongst their ranks in the shape of Tom Bird. Tom was part of the Saipan FC squad who finished 2 nd in the 2011 Prague Masters Plate competition. Saipan FC went on to a Cup Final in Barcelona this year and Missing Magpies would surely hope to emulate that.

RFM entered two squads into the 2009 Amsterdam Fives under the names Tom Tom One and Tom Tom Go. The two squads had mixed fortunes on the day with one squad making the Cup Semi-Finals before going out to the eventual winners, Bull Heads, and the other squad narrowly coming runners-up in the Plate Final to Plate specialists the CSF. In 2010, they finished 5th in their 6 team group to miss out on the knock-out stages. They come back with a vengeance in 2011 when they went all the way through to the Cup Semi-Finals before going out to Athletico Do Hollande.

RFM were certainly an improving team and that run continued from last year when they took the lead in this one through Gary Walsh. Missing Magpies hit back before the break through Sam Fleet and we were 1-1 at half-time. There was no addition to the score in the second half and the teams would have to settle for a point each. Only time would tell if this was a point gained or two points dropped.

The last two teams to get started were Double Ya Dosage and Fat Ginger Kids. Double Ya Dosage were the second squad from the Pimp My Side FC stable with many debutants in the squad. Fat Ginger Kids were all making their debut and in Amsterdam on a stag weekend so we witnessed the dubious legality of a player gracing the pitch adorned in a fetching pick tutu.

The two teams looked pretty well match on the pitch and there was nothing between the two teams either at half-time or full-time with the scorers untroubled as the game finished 0-0.

It was a solid point for both teams and gave the teams a platform to build on going into Round 2.
