Fylde FC A (Eng)

Deddington Sea Eagles (Eng) won 5-4 on penalties.

The 2017 Krakow Trophy Plate Final was to be contested by two teams who had grown into this tournament. Today would see both Deddington Sea Eagles and FC Fylde A would both pick up medals but who would take the winners medals and the coveted Plate trophy?

With six games down and one to go the teams would need to summon up one last effort to collect those winners' medals. Deddington Sea Eagles had a fine record today of 3 wins, 2 defeats and just the 1 defeat. FC Fylde A finished the group in style with a 2-1 win and then had the biggest win of the day in the Plate Semi-Final, 7-1. The two teams met in the group phase with FC Fylde A winning 2-1. In fact, FC Fylde A had won both their games against Deddington teams and so a hat-trick would see them on the road to glory.

The first major chance of the game fell to Deddington Sea Eagles and it was an early lead for the men in black and white stripes. Jonathan Simon Norris scored his fifth of the tournament give his team a vital lead. FC Fylde A were not to be swept aside though and they equalized through Ramzy Elftesi's 7th goal of the day. It was 1-1 at half-time.

In the second half it was Deddington Sea Eagles who regained the lead. Edd Preece had a shot that was saved and Mark Cook pounced to turn in the rebound. He took his tally for the tournament to six. The lead would not last long though and FC Fylde were level in a minute. Ben Collinson equalizing to make it 2-2.

In the final stages, Deddington Sea Eagles had a couple of chances to win it – Jonathan Simon Norris shooting from distance but over the top. Then probably the best chance of all as Edd Preece did superbly down the left, he cut inside the last man and with just the goalkeeper to beat thundered his shot from 6 yards but over the bar. The game finished 2-2 and a penalty shoot-out would decide the Plate Final.

It would be FC Fylde A to take the first penalty. Ben Collinson started us off in style by planting his shot into the top right corner. Ed Preece was the first man up for the Sea Eagles and he went to the goalkeeper's right – Jonny Schofield went the right way and got his hands to the ball but was unable to keep it out. 1-1.

Matt Hinton was up next as he struck the ball low to the goalkeeper's right with the ‘keeper rooted to the spot, 2-1. Jonathan Simon Norris then sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to make it 2-2. Jack Davidson stepped forward to start the third round of penalties. Davidson went to the left hand corner, the goalkeeper went the right way but Davidson put the ball nicely inside the post for 3-2.

All eyes were now on Mark Cook. He scored the pressure penalty in their last shoot-out and had six goals to his name today. No problem here as he put his penalty in the same spot as Davidson put his. It was now 3-3 and sudden death. Ramzy Elftesi went the same way to make it 4-3 to FC Fylde before Rob Bradford changed it up to go bottom right and equalize for 4-4.

The fifth round of penalties was to be the decisive round. Nathaniel Smithies made the walk forward for FC Fylde A. He had three goals under his belt today and in his run up he sent the goalkeeper one way and sent the ball the other way. Agonisingly for him and his team-mates he sent the ball curling wide of the right hand post. The door was open for Deddington Sea Eagles to win it…

Cometh the hour, cometh the man – that man was Michael Large. As with his other colleagues in his shoot-out he had scored his penalty earlier in the day. If he scored again his team would be victorious. He coolly rolled the ball low into the back of the net, to the right of the goalkeeper for 5-4. An understated fist pump was one of relief more than joy before the celebrations got underway in earnest.

Congratulations to all at Deddington Sea Eagles who would collect medals and the winners' trophy. Our commiserations to C Fylde A who played their part in a memorable final.
