We
were almost at the conclusion of Group B. Round
5 began with just two points separating the top
four. We knew the four teams who would progress
to the Cup and the Plate – we just didn't know
which teams would go through to which competition!
All games would kick-off at the same time so it
was likely to be a roller-coaster of permutations
before the dust settled on Group B at just after
2pm this afternoon.
We
start on Pitch A with Trinacria versus FC Fylde
B. Trinacria would need to win and better the
result of Deddington Sea Otters to assure their
place in the Cup. They arguably had the toughest
job of the final four teams as they played against
the league leaders, Deddington Sea Otters played
against Two Balls One Touch and GSF Drunkerz had
their walkover to collect.
For
FC Fylde B, it was a little simpler – win the
game, win Group B. A draw would be enough only
if Deddington Sea Otters failed to win. A loss
and they would be in the Plate. This should be
a cracker as both teams had to go all out for
the win.
We
started well with three goals in the first half.
FC Fylde B were the happier as they outgunned
Trinacria 2-1. There were goals from as Tommy
Router and Joe Fratazzi outgunned Nuno De Jesus's
strike for the Belgians. We have it on good authority
that Tommy Router's goal was a screamer worth
four goals (source: Tommy Router). His goal would
only count as one but that's all FC Fylde B needed
it to count for.
The
second half played out with no further addition
to the score and FC Fylde B were through to the
Cup as Group B champions with 12 points from a
possible 15 (only Krakowcaine had more). For Trinacria,
they would play their knock-out football in the
Plate competition.
GSF
Drunkerz were done on the field of play for
the group phase as they picked up the 3-0 walkover
win. It took them to 11 points and confirmed
they would finish second in the table due to
FC Fylde B's win above.
The
last round of fixtures in Group B were scheduled
to kick-off at the same time. So, at the start
of play we didn't know who would be going through.
Deddington Sea Otters had a decent chance but
things were out of their own hands. They knew
GSF Drunkerz had the knock-out win to come which
meant they had to win and hope FC Fylde B failed
to win. If they won and FC Fylde B v Trinacria
was a draw then they were through (on goal difference
or goals scored unless the other game was a high
scoring draw and they only won by one). If Trinacria
won they simply had to match or better Trinacria's
win to go through on goal difference, goals scored
or head-to-head depending on the final scores.
They
were up against Two Balls One Touch who already
knew they were out but they could finish the day
on a high. It was a struggle early on though as
Deddington Sea Otters raced to a 4-0 half-time
lead. Joe Thornton set them on their way with
a brace before Jordan Kaye contributed a third.
Joe Thornton completed a first half hat-trick
with the fourth.
Deddington
Sea Otters were doing their bit but they needed
a favour from Trinacria over on Pitch A. It was
unlikely Trinacria were going to better their
win so they needed the Belgians to grab an equaliser
– just the one goal would do it. Things never
happened on Pitch A as the Sea Otters would have
wanted them to as that game stayed at 2-1 to C
Fylde B.
Here
on Pitch C, Deddington Sea Otters duly completed
their win. It finished 5-2 in the end with John
Bird scoring his second of the day for the Otters.
Two Balls One Touch finished with a flourish as
James Crowther scored twice.
