Plate
Semi-Final time and things were getting interesting.
We were now just 6 games from the conclusion
of the 2018 Amsterdam Sixes with 4 teams in
contention for the Plate and 4 teams for the
Cup. We began with the Plate Semi-Finals and
up first was FC Letcom against FC Gijon.
FC
Letcom qualified for this stage by finishing
in third position in Group A with Spider FC
Gijon taking fourth position in Group B. The
two teams had very similar records in the group
phase with both winning 2 of their 5 fixtures
and picking up 6 points. FC Letcom had the best
defensive record of the two teams with 6 goals
conceded (compared to FC Gijon's 8 goals). FC
Gijon were much more potent in front of goal
with 12 goals scored compared to the 6 for FC
Letcom. It is worth noting though that Group
B (FC Gijon's group) was a much higher scoring
group with 66 goals compared to 54 in Group
A.
In
this Semi-Final, it was the attacking prowess
of FC Gijon which proved dominant. Kieran Eastwood
put the ahead in the first half. Then, Connor
Seymour scored either side of half time as FC
Gijon went through 3-0. They proved they had
some defensive stability of their own as goalkeeper
Chris Jones kept their third clean sheet of
the tournament.
FC
Letcom were out at the Semi-Final stage for
the second year running. Third time lucky next
year?
