At the start of Round 5, we would see Vieze Vu play Cheesecake FC on Pitch 4. Vieze Vu had suffered the curse of the defending champions. In what was our 99th tournament only 1 team had successfully defended a eurofootballfives.com title. That was Athletico Do Hollande when they won the 2010 & 2011 Algarve Open. Following defeat in their previous game, the best Vieze Vu could hope for today was to qualify for the Plate.

Curiously enough, Athletico Do Hollande's opponents in that 2011 Algarve Open Cup Final were….Cheesecake FC. Cheesecake FC had already wrapped up Group A so this game was effectively a free hit for them. They would no doubt be looking for a bit of revenge as Vieze Vu (playing as Toros) knocked Cheesecake FC out at the Semi-Final stage last year (2-1)

There was more pressure on Vieze Vu who needed a result. A win would guarantee them a place in the Plate. A draw would be enough if Lostwithiel FC and John Lewis FC both failed to win. A defeat would also be enough in that scenario as although Lostwithiel FC and John Lewis were only a point behind, Vieze Vu had a better goal difference so a draw for the English teams would not be enough.

As it was, Cheesecake FC got their revenge and in style. There was two goals in each half as Cheesecake FC surged to a 4-0 win. Mark Hignett and Kevin Raphael were on target in the first half, Ben Woods and Phil Shaw were on target in the second.

Game 14 of Group A was the fixture between FC Letcom and Lostwithiel FC. What was at stake for the two teams?

FC Letcom needed a win and Ross Kemp FC to fail to win to qualify for the Cup in second place. It would mean the same two teams qualifying from Group A as last year. A draw would be enough (due to goal difference) if Ross Kemp FC lost their final game. Defeat would mean a place in the Plate.

Lostwithiel FC had to win and this would be enough if John Lewis FC failed to win. If John Lewis FC also won then it would come down to goal difference. Lostwithiel FC had the advantage -2 compared to -7. Anything less than a win would mean elimination.

At half-time the game was delicately poised. We kicked off the second period still level at 0-0. In the second half though it was Lostwithiel FC who secured their aims. Josh Cook and James Hutchings goals outgunned Ryan Clarke's goal for FC Letcom.

The 15th and final game of Group A had a lot riding on it for John Lewis FC. They knew what they had to do in order to avoid elimination. They had to win. Not only did they have to win but they had to win by at least 6 to go level on points with Lostwithiel FC and then reach the Plate on goal difference. The biggest win in Group A so far had been 5-0 so the odds were against them.

FC Letcom's defeat in the previous game meant Ross Kemp FC had already achieved Cup qualification. The Group A title was already out of reach so they would finish second regardless of this result. It would be good for them to take a victory and some momentum into the Cup Semi-Finals though.

Ross Kemp FC edged the first half 2-1 with two goals from Kieran Cherrie. Adam Leake scored his third of the day for John Lewis FC. With just one half of football to go in Group A, John Lewis FC's hopes of Plate qualification were disappearing. They now need to score 7 without reply. Jay Andrews and Liam Ellison goals for Ross Kemp FC didn't help their cause. John Lewis FC ended up going down 4-2.

Dominic Tree would score what would be their last goal of the tournament. John Lewis FC were eliminated although in a particularly tight group where the defending champions finished fifth it showed what a high quality group this had been.
