Into Round 6 of Group A and we were coming to the business end of the league table. Teams could ill afford to slip up now in such a tight group where a win could bring great rewards and defeat could see chances severely dented.

To kick us off in Pitch A we had local team CEPL taking on the Welsh dragons of Goals Aloud. It would take a brave man to pick the winner of this fixture as both teams had two wins to their name but also a couple of defeats. Neither team had managed to string two results together which would see them surge up the table. Following a 5-1 win in the last game, Goals Aloud had the chance to do just that.

CEPL were looking to return to winning ways after losing to the league leaders in the previous fixture. At half-time it was a case of honours even as a Lukasz Sobik goal for the Dutch cancelled out a Sion Williams goal for the Welsh. In the second half it was to be honours even again as Williams grabbed his second of the game but Przemek Krawczyk prevented it being a winning goal.

The final score of 2-2 did not really help either side as they remained in 4th and 5th place respectively. For CEPL, they could do no more as this was their final game. Goals Aloud could still make the Cup with a win in their final game.

Brighton & Hove Rockets in 7th place met GBS Reds in 3rd place in Game 17 of Group A. The English team was looking for their first victory of the day. GBS Reds of the Czech Republic were riding high in 3rd place but they were without a win in two games now as they had lost and drawn their previous two games. They needed a win to reverse their form as much as Brighton & Hove Rockets did.

At the interval the game remained 0-0. A draw would have been an ok result for GBS Reds putting them in 2nd place but would have meant a return of just 2 points out of 9 so they would have been keen to get a winner and go top. Brighton & Hove Rockets were 5 points adrift at the foot of the table and a draw was really of no use to them as it would have condemned them to 7th place.

In the second half the form book was turned upside down as Joe Di Fede opened the scoring to give the Rockets a 1-0 lead. Chris Guijarro made it 2-0 and it looked like a first win of the tournament for Brighton & Hove. GBS Reds were unable to fight back as the English team kept their first clean sheet of the day. They remained in 7th place but were now only 2 points of 6th place and 3 points off 3rd place. GBS Reds remained in 3rd place but the opportunity to go back the top of Group A was gone.

The final two teams to begin their challenge in Group A were Olimpico (a Spanish-based Ecuadorian team) against Midway Northerners. South American ex-pat teams have been successful in eurofootballfives competition before as recently as the 2010 Prague Trophy when Deportivo claimed the title. How would Olimpico fare?

Their opponents were the first of two teams from Midway FC making their debut in a eurofootballfives.com tournament. Under the name of Midway FC Northerners the English team more than held their own against the men wearing their national team shirts. It looked like Ecuador were playing West Ham – more than interesting if that match occurred in real-life. In this game though, we had our third consecutive goal-less first-half.

You needed to watch the second half in Group A to see goals though and again we got them – 2 in fact. The goals were shared amongst the sides as Cristian Cabeza scored for the home team and Michael Cullen opened Midway Northerners account. A good solid start for both teams.
