As the 2011 Amsterdam Fives Cup Quarter-Finals were about to get underway we were down to the elite 6 teams in the tournament representing 3 proud nations - the Czech Republic, England and Holland.

The two group winners, Athletico Do Hollande and Inter Women, had earned a bye to the Semi-Finals so they would watch on with interest at who their next opponents would be.

We started on Pitch B with Rigford Seahawks Alpha of England against RFM of Holland. Rigford Seahawks had played well in their group phase to finish 2nd of 7 teams and would arguably be favourites against RFM who finished 3rd in Group B. If the Dutch team were to start the first half as underdogs they would start the second half as favourites following Richard Dewsbury's 5th goal of the tournament. It gave RFM a 1-0 lead at the break.

All eyes were on the Rigford Seahawks Alpha team to see if they could emulate their Omega squad and reach the Semi-Finals (albeit in a different competition). They would need to overturn a one goal deficit to do so. When Marcus Wilcox made it 2-0 to RFM the Seahawks task was even more difficult and ultimately a task that would prove beyond them on this occasion. The Alpha squad's day on the pitch was over but they still had a part to play at the 2011 Amsterdam Fives – namely to take advantage of the clubhouse bar and cheer on their Omega squad.

RFM had a Semi-Final against Athletico Do Hollande to prepare for.

So, who would meet Inter Women in the other Semi-Final? It was England's The Gunners taking on GBS Reds of the Czech Republic. The Gunners were making their debut so were in unchartered territory. Although GBS Reds were experienced in eurofootballfives.com competition they were also entering new ground in the Cup competition as usually they played their knock-out football in the Plate tournament. We were intrigued to see how this one would turn out.

Momentum in these tournaments goes a long way and The Gunners had it on their side having won their last two games to reach this stage. GBS Reds though were without a win in 3 games and reached the Quarter-Finals courtesy of their early morning form. It was this form they needed to find to give them hope of progressing.

If momentum was on the side of the Gunners going into the game it certainly was at the break as they surged into a 4-0 lead and all but sealed this tie in the opening period. GBS Reds clawed their way back into in the second half but the damage had already been done as Marco Lepee-Rivero's goal for the Czechs was a mere consolation.

We sadly had to say goodbye to GBS Reds who had been a joy to host at the tournament. We would see them again in just 3 weeks time at the 2011 Prague Masters.

For The Gunners though, Frankie Notaro's hat-trick added to goals from Tommy Powell and Daniel Sparks fired them into the Semi-Finals where Inter Women awaited. The Inter Women squad must have been concerned on this form!
