We were down to our final 4 teams in the Plate competition with a strong home challenge looking to take the first silverware of the day. There were 3 teams from Portugal and Far Out FC as the lone overseas challenge.

The first Semi-Final would see Futeboladas FC versus 11 Esperancas Faz Club. The game saw the 3rd placed team of Group A play the 4th placed team in Group B which would make Futeboladas FC favourites. They had a return of 8 points compared to 7 points for Esperancas in the group phase and only 1 defeat to their opponents 2.

We were to bear witness to a very close first half and Futeboladas FC just had the edge as they took a slender 1-0 lead into the interval. Miguel Pereira scored the vital goal and it was a goal that could have been avoided from the Esperancas Faz Clube perspective. The goalkeeper came out, lost possession and Pereira took full advantage to finish from a tight angle.

In the second half, from virtually the exact same position 11 Esperancas Faz Clube equalized through Joao Fajardo and it was a goal that would take us into extra time. Extra time was “Golden Goal” but that goal proved elusive and a penalty shoot-out would ensue.

11 Esperancas Faz Clube would shoot first but a fine save from the Futeboladas FC goalkeeper saved it. It stayed at 0-0 as the 11 Esperancas Faz Clube goalkeeper Vando Beldade returned the favour pushing the first penalty he faced onto the cross bar and out. The next three penalties were converted to give 11 Esperancas Faz Clube a 2-1 lead. Vando Beldade then became the hero of the moment as an outstretched boot saved what would be the final Futeboladas kick of the tournament.

The second Plate Semi-Final would see Galacticos take on Far Out FC. Galacticos FC had the better of the league positions in the group phase but Far Out FC were arguably the favourites as they were the highest scoring team in the tournament and had the joint best goal difference in the group stages. However, their best form had been in the early stages of the group phase with results tailing off. This game was up for grabs.

A sub-plot for the game was the Top Goalscorer award. The game featured the two top goalscorers in the tournament to date – Mauro Cardoso of Galacticos, Joe Bardwell of Far Out FC. Both men stood on a tally of 6 goals.

It was Joe Bardwell who struck first in this contest to give his team the lead in the Semi-Final and himself in the golden boot stakes. Midway through the second half Bardwell powered a chance through the goalkeeper who could do nothing to prevent Galacticos going behind.

He made it 2-0 with a cheeky dinked finish and all but secured his team's progress to the Plate Final. In the process he had eliminated his closest challenger to the top goalscorer prize in the process. There was almost a hat-trick for Bardwell late on but the Galacticos ‘keeper prevented him claiming the proverbial match ball.

We had to say goodbye to Galacticos but the journey would continue for Far Out FC as they had a debut Final to prepare for.
