The
first final of the day would see FC Dukesfield
and Inter Urmum come head-to-head to lift the
2011 Mallorca Tournament Plate Title.
Who
would emerge victorious? Well, we could look at
their previous encounter in the group stage to
give us a clue. On that occasion a closely contested
game was decided by the odd goal with FC Dukesfield
claiming the victory. That was the group stages
though and it meant nothing now.
With
six games of football already under their belt
the two teams would need to summon one last burst
of energy to ensure they would be picking up winners
and not runners-up medals in the presentation.
The game itself was relatively sedate as the amount
of football and the Mallorca sun was taking its
toll on some tired legs and bodies.
It
was perhaps no surprise that at half-time and
then again at full-time we were no closer to knowing
who would be lifting the inaugural Mallorca tournament
trophy as we were locked at 0-0. The stalemate
also looked like putting pay to Chris Aldred's
hopes of finishing the tournament as top goalscorer
but nevertheless he had had a fine day with a
return of 8 goals.
We
were into Golden Goal extra time and if we were
still unable to find a goal then this Plate Final
would be decided by a penalty shoot-out. It looked
odds on that penalties would be needed until the
games decisive moment arrived. A goalmouth scramble
led to Ian Watts bundling the ball over the line
to send the FC Dukesfield side into raptures.
By contrast, Inter Urmum looked inconsolable having
put so much effort into their campaign and particularly
this final. They should not be down though as
they added a great deal to this tournament and
sure success will come to them in future tournaments.
