Policia Local de Palma (Spa)

The 3 Lions had the opportunity to join Policia Local de Palma at the top of Group A when they met Olimpico. The English team had performed well to claim their first win against Askeaton FC and they probably didn't get the credit they deserved due to the controversy of the infamous disallowed goal. Olimpico were languishing in 5 th place despite two good performances but they needed to turn performance into points.

At half-time we were level at 0-0 with a result not really helping either team. The game opened up and we had goals to enjoy. Tom Nolan put 3 Lions into the lead and for a team that had looked strong in defence so far it was likely to be a crucial goal. Could Olimpico come back? Sadly not for the Ecuadorians but 3 Lions would not have cared about this as Chris Baginsky doubled the lead to make it 2-0. The win put 3 Lions joint top of the table with an identical goals scored and against record as Policia Local de Palma but the Police did have a game in hand.

Olimpico left the field with nothing to show for their exploits and they remained in 5th …for now.

How would Askeaton FC recover from the disappointment of their last game? We were about to find out as they took on an undefeated Midway Northerners team who had the opportunity to move on to 7 points and lead Group A. Riyad Ibrahim's second goal in as many games put the team from England in the ascendency and it was they who lead 1-0 at the break.

What now for Askeaton? Well, a lot of heart and a lot of character as they forced their way back into the game and scored a vital equalizer through captain Michael Sheahan. There was to be no further addition to the scoreline as the game ended 1-1. It was a second draw in three games for Midway Northerners who occupied 3 rd place. Askeaton FC were in 4th on 4 points but both were still very much in the hunt for Cup qualification.

The final game of Round 3 saw the team at the top, Policia Local de Palma, play the team at the bottom, CSF. If we had a bookie at the tournament surely he'd have been taking a lot of money for the Policia and if he did he would have been a very happy and rich bookie at full-time.

It was all going so well for Policia Local de Palma and everything was following the form-book. At half-time they were 3-1 up, looking comfortable and could almost taste being on top of the Group A table with a maximum 9 points. The CSF had other ideas though!

Thomas Mottram (the scorer of CSF's opening goal of the competition in the first half) started the second-half comeback as he made it 3-2. Then unbelievably, judging by the cheers that rang out from Pitch A, the CSF had pulled it back to 3-3 through Alex Thomas. If you thought that was good it got better – Oscar Zamora, who lives in Australia and made his way to Europe to compete, made those air miles all worthwhile when he grabbed a 7 th goal of the game to put the CSF 4-3 up.

Policia Local de Palma were shell-shocked. The CSF were ecstatic and the watching crowds were enthralled. The result put 3 Lions on top courtesy of goal difference and the CSF moved into 5th place. There was now only 3 points separating 1st from 5th – this was a really close group. Hold on to your seats.
