Game 7 of Group B was an important fixture for both The Warriors and Ashtead Vets. The teams currently sat in 4th and 6th position and, as the games ticked by, would need a win to act as a catalyst for their tournament challenge. A draw here would not really help either team too much in the overall context of the group.

These two teams met 12 months ago in the Algarve Veterans Tournament Plate Semi-Final and played out a pretty close contest. In the end there was just the one goal in it as The Warriors emerged 1-0 winners.

It was another close contest here in Lisbon as the two teams went into half-time level at 1-1. Rob McCready opened the Ashtead Vets account whilst Paul Janman scored his first of the day for The Warriors.

After the break there was to be a winner and it was The Warriors who were on the right side of the scoreline again as Alex Finney scored his second of the day to seal all 3 points. It was a vital win for The Warriors who moved on to 4 points and were back in the hunt for Cup qualification. The defeat left Ashtead Vets struggling at the foot of the table.

Mavericks versus Pioes was the next game on Pitch D and was a battle between the 3rd and 2nd placed teams respectively. A win for The Mavericks would see them go top and mean just 1 point separating the top three (although Tanagra would have a game in hand). A win for Pioes would see them go three points clear and create a 5 point gap over their opponets meaning Cup qualification would almost be secure.

We expected a tightly fought contest and that is exactly we got. There was nothing to separate the teams in the opening period and we reached the interval level at 0-0. The second half followed the same pattern with both defences and goalkeepers on top.

The final score was 0-0. Only time would tell if this was 1 point gained of 2 points dropped. You felt the draw was probably a better result for Pioes than it was for Mavericks though.

To complete Round 3 of Group B we had WEEDS versus Tanagra. Both teams had a 100% record – WEEDS an unwanted one with two defeats, Tanagra a cherished one with two victories.

A quick look at the league table would suggest this might be a formality for Tanagra. That was too simplistic an assumption though as WEEDS had only narrowly lost their first two games – both by the odd goal. Sometimes getting no reward for your efforts can lead to heads dropping and results and performance quickly dropping off. WEEDS showed no signs of letting this happen though as they competed once again and were on level terms, 0-0, at half-time.

After the break Tanagra broke the deadlock with Rui Lopes maintaining his goal per game record to give the Portuguese a 1-0 lead. Tanagra had yet to concede in the tournament so it was always going to be tough to get back into it but that task became more difficult when Jacob Hugo doubled the lead and sealed the points.

Tanagra were top of the table on 9 points. WEEDS remained in 5th position.
