Following over 20 successful tournaments in Albufeira (Algarve), Barcelona, Mallorca and Valencia over the last few years it is clear to see you love your football set against a backdrop of sun, beach, sea, good climate and not to mention a cracking nightlife. It was therefore no surprise to see Lisbon become our 5th destination on the Iberian Peninsular back in 2013. The 25th June 2016 marked our third visit to the Portuguese capital and, as ever, it was a cracking weekend.

The first two challengers to get us underway in Group A on Pitch A this year would be Parques Tejo (Por) versus Your Mum (Eng). We didn't have to wait long before we would get our first goal of the tournament as there was less than 60 seconds on the clock when Djassy Gomes fired the home side into the lead. Your Mum grew into the first half as Alex Peters scored their first of the day but a second for Djassy Gomes ensured it was Parques Tejo who lead 2-1 at the break.

In the second half the next goal was likely to be crucial – if Your Mum could score it then it would be game on. If Parques Tejo could claim it then a two goal cushion would send them on their way. The fourth goal of the game would be scored by Parques Tejo's Elton to open up a 3-1 lead. Elton added another later on to make the final score 4-1.

Game 2 of Group A was SNQTB versus Southgate County as Portugal met England for the second game in a row.

The format of the tournament in this 10-team Open Age contest was two groups of five with the top two from each group qualifying for the Cup competition, third and fourth qualifying for the Plate competition and the teams in fifth position being eliminated. A fast start and three points would no doubt help the victors on their way.

It was Southgate County who started off the faster with Simon Hicks opening his team's account for the tournament. They would not have to wait long to celebrate a second goal as Tony Sayers found the net to make it 2-0 and it wasn't even half-time. When the half-time whistle went it remained 2-0 and the English team were in command.

After the break the third goal of the game gave SNQTB renewed hope and gave Southgate County something to think about it. Francisco Costa brought the home team back into it as he reduced the deficit to 2-1. There was to be no further goals and it was the travelling team who would take all 3 points.

The final team to begin their quest for the 2016 Lisbon Tournament title was World Pinteur of France. They had watched the other four teams in Group A take to the field and now was the time for the French team to shine.

World Pinteur would start against Parques Tejo (Por). The Portuguese team had already collected three points from a 4-1 win in their opening game so it promised to be a tough game for World Pinteur. The two teams proved evenly matched and there was nothing to separate the two teams in the first half. We reached half-time level at 0-0.

In the second half we were to see some goals and it was World Pinteur who broke the deadlock. Kevin Payet, who attended the tournament from Reunion Island, justified the long journey to put his team ahead. It was to get even better for World Pinteur when Romain Ziat made it 2-0 and it looked like the points were safe. Parques Tejo threatened to comeback when they hit the post from a free-kick but they were unable to breakthrough.

With their first games under their belts it was round 2 for all the teams in Group A and time to settle in to the tournament. SNQTB and Your Mum had both tasted defeat in their opening fixtures and were looking to bounce back.

Your Mum were the most capped team here in Lisbon as they made a sixth appearance (under various names). They made their debut in the 2011 Budapest Fives for captain Jack Croft's stag weekend with 3 teams. The pick of the squads went on to reach the Plate Final finishing Runners-up to Hungarian side Al-Kaloida.

They returned as Arse-A-Lona FC in the 2011 Barca Fives where they reached the Plate Semi-Finals and lost narrowly, 1-0, to the eventual winners HMS Sultan FC. They competed in the 2012 Berlin Fives as FC Wein Schweine Fliegen and finished 3rd in a 6-team group before a Plate Semi-Final defeat to East Compton Seagulls. The 2013 Algarve Open saw them compete as Let Us Win or Elsie. They drew the Group of Death that saw them finish 5th in Group A which featured 3 of the 4 Cup Semi-Finalists. They reached the Plate Semi-Finals before a narrow 2-1 defeat to eventual Plate Winners Water Boy.

It was then Slovakia and the 2014 Bratislava Fives where they finished in joint 3rd on 7 points in Group A but 4th on goal difference. They met Budapest Celtic Lions in the Plate Quarter-Finals but went out 3-1 to the Hungarian side. July 2015 saw them travel to Amsterdam as Your Mum where storm Zejko defeated all teams. Your Mum completed 4 of their 5 group games in hugely challenging conditions before the Code Red weather warning curtailed the day's activities. We were back to clement weather in Lisbon this June.

The sun was shining in Portugal and it was shining on the performance of Your Mum. They raced into a 2-0 first half-lead as Alex Peters made it 2 goals in 2 games before Daniel Lloyd Davies doubled the lead. Daniel Lloyd Davies then grabbed his second of the game to seal a great 3-0 victory.

Next up on Pitch A was World Pinteur versus Southgate County . Both teams came into the game with 3 points to their name – whoever won would be top of the table. If they drew they would share the lead on 4 points.

Southgate County were challenging on two fronts in Lisbon in both the Open Age and the Veterans Tournaments. They debuted in @eurofootball competition last year at the 2015 Berlin Fives. They had a tough start losing 3-0 to 2 x Cup Semi-Finalists Tinniedad & Tobacco and then 4-1 to eventual runners-up Hurting Berlin. They turned things around with a 3-0 win over Scandittack FC, a 3-2 win over Fail Madrid and 4-1 win over Rayford Athletic. They qualified for the Cup competition where they went out 2-1 to the eventual winners Pink Flamingos A.

Southgate County, with their win over SNQTB this morning, were now on a run of four successive wins in the group phase of our tournaments. World Pinteur had looked classy in their first game so this promised to be quite a contest.
