Southgate
County Vets and NJV7 found themselves propping
up Group A with both these sides looking to get
their first points and goals of the tournament.
With 2 games to go after this one there was still
plenty of time to qualify for the Cup or the Plate
but the teams would need to win this one.
The
first half came and went with neither side being
able to find a successful route to goal. We kicked
off the second half at 0-0 meaning both teams
had gone five consecutive halves of football without
a goal.
This
unwanted record was to go for one of these teams
after the break and it was NJV7 who broke their
duck. Jose Branco scored their first goal of the
tournament and for good measure Rui Branco made
it 2-0. There was no coming back from that for
Southgate County Vets and the game finished with
no further addition to the score.
NJV7
were off the mark with their first win. The wait
for Southgate County would continue.
Stilton
Rovers came into Round 3 having just secured their
first win of the tournament. They would meet a
team in form in the shape of Crabtree Amblers
who were looking to make it three wins out of
three. If they could secure victory, Crabtree
Amblers would open up a three point lead at the
top.
Stilton
Rovers struck the first blow as they took a first
half lead. James Dey scored his first goal of
the day and became the first man to beat Chris
Gates in the Crabtree Amblers goal today.
The
games so far today had been fairly low-scoring
so goals were at a premium. As a result, when
Peter Ciezak made it 2-0 to Stilton Rovers they
were well on their way to victory. If there was
any doubt in the destination of the points the
doubts were dispelled when Andrew Walmsley made
it 3-0. It was a stunning victory for Stilton
Rovers who made it a three way tie at the top.
To
complete Round 3 was Dickie Dogs versus Sago.
Sago had the chance to open up a three point lead
at the top if they could secure victory here.
A Dickie Dogs win would mean that four teams would
share the lead all on 6 points.
Having
seen Sago win both of their opening games 4-0
the Dickie Dogs took a defensive approach to this
game and looked to hold on for a draw. The plan
went well for a while until Carlos Rocha put the
Portuguese team ahead. Even after the goal the
Dickie Dogs stuck to their game plan. They were
looking to keep things tight at the back and hope
to grab a goal on the break. Sago were looking
to increase their lead but were frustrated by
their opponent's resilience.
In
what promised to be a tight group for second to
fifth positions the Dickie Dogs were operating
a long-term plan and trying to ensure a healthy
goal difference rather than risk getting blown
away by chasing an equalizer. The game finished
1-0 to Sago who maintained their 100% record.
