Group B began with one established teams on the eurofootballfives.com circuit against one team making its European bow. It was Mavericks versus WEEDS.

Mavericks made their debut at the 2012 Valencia Fives. They were impressive in the group phase but a series of draws (3 out of 4 games) hindered their progress but they qualified for the Plate competition. They sailed through the Quarter-Finals 4-0 before a penalty shoot-out exit at the hands of Club Tropicana Drinks FC. Fast forward 12 months and they competed at the 2013 Barcelona Fives. This time they had 3 wins out of 4 games as they won Group C to qualify for the elite Cup competition. They then met the eventual winners, Los Swallacticos of Northern Ireland, in the Quarter-Finals and went out 3-1. This will be their first appearance in our Veterans Tournament.

The extra experience of Mavericks may well have been a contributing factor in deciding this game as a Grant Taylor second half goal proved the be the match winner. Mavericks were on their way with a 1-0 win. There was still plenty of time left for WEEDS to make an impact on this tournament.

Match 2 saw Tanagra take on The Warriors.

The Warriors were appearing here in Lisbon after making their debut in the Algarve last Summer. The Warriors started off well in Group B with two 1-0 wins in their first 3 games and ultimately finished 4th in the table. They defeated Ashtead Vets 1-0 in the Plate Semi-Finals before just missing out on the winners trophy as Norton Old Boys emerged victorious 1-0.

They started well against the team from the host nation and we reached the break with the teams level at 0-0. It's an old cliché that goals change games and, beyond stating the obvious, it does. Tanagra bagged the first goal of the game through Jacob Hugo. The Warriors then had to come out in search of the equaliser and there was always the risk of conceding a second whilst trying to get back on terms. This is what happened as they were hit by Rui Lopes who made it 2-0. That's how it finished with the home side claiming all three points.

The final teams in Group B to start their challenge were Ashtead Vets versus Pioes.

Ashtead Vets made their debut at the 2015 Algarve Veterans Tournament and impressed. They finished 3rd in Group A with 2 wins, 2 draws and just the 1 defeat. They qualified for the Plate competition but hopes of glory were dashed in the Semi-Finals with a narrow 1-0 loss to The Warriors.

The English team had enjoyed a long day/night out on the beers – perfect preparation for today's tournament and they seemed to “enjoy” a hangover off and on the pitch as they struggled in the early exchanges. Pioes took full advantage to lead 3-0 at half time thanks to goals from Bruno Bambo, Joaquim Lopes and then Bruno Bambo again.

Ashtead Vets pulled it back in the second half and prevented their opponents adding to their tally but they were unable to get on the scoresheet at the other end. The second half finished as it started – 3-0 to Pioes.
