Southgate
County Vets were back in action on the field of
play in Round 2. They would play against Stilton
Rovers.
Both
teams had suffered defeat in the opening fixture
and were looking to bounce back quickly. Although
early in the day the teams needed to get points
on the board sooner rather than later to kick-start
their challenge.
The
first half came and went with no score and as
things stood at 0-0 only time would tell if a
draw would be a point gained or two points dropped.
Stilton Rovers would not have to dwell on this
quandary as they took the game by the scruff of
the neck in the second half. Goals from James
Williams and Peter Ciezak turned the game in their
favour and they had their first European win in
the bag.
In
the next game we had one team looking for their
first victory of the day in the shape of NJV7.
They were up against Sago who were aiming to make
it two wins out of two and make a good early case
for Cup qualification.
In
their first game NJV7 had competed well but found
themselves lose by the odd goal. They fell behind
in this one too as Pedro Ribeiro scored his third
of the tournament already. Sago were 1-0 up and
having won 4-0 in their first game were on the
goal trail again. Rui Gomes and Luis Felix made
it 3-0 and we were still in the first half.
Sago
were laying down a marker early on in this tournament
and they completed a second successive 4-0 win
in a row when Rui Gomes completed the scoring.
The
third fixture of the round was Crabtree Amblers
versus Dickie Dogs. The two teams had both got
off to a winning start this morning and both had
claimed 1-0 victories. A second win for either
side would see them go joint top on 6 points (although
behind Sago on goal difference). A draw would
see the two teams share second place on 4 points.
The
two teams battled out a very even first half and
we reached the turnaround with defences and goalkeepers
on top. Neither team could find a successful path
to goal and we turned around level at 0-0.
In
Round 1 both teams had found a winner after a
goal-less first half. One team was to repeat that
feat and it was déjà vu for Crabtree
Amblers as Ade Chester, as he had done against
NJV7, provided a second half winner. Dickie Dogs
handed out the same medicine in their last game
but were on the wrong end of the result this time
out.
It
was a great result for Crabtree Amblers and they
joined Sago at the summit of Group A with a 100%
winning record.
