The
Plate Semi-Finals would see two English teams,
one Polish team and one Czech team battle it out
to lift the trophy.
The
first semi-final saw Brighton & Hove Rockets
face Radio Taxi Barbakan. Brighton & Hove
Rockets having won their first three games had
lost their previous two to slip out of the Cup
reckoning and into the Plate competition. They
would have to arrest this slump in results if
they wanted to extend their run in the Krakow
Trophy and reach the Plate Final.
Barbakan's
form on the other hand was the reverse. They had
just come off the back of a 3-0 win and made the
Plate without really expecting it so they would
be dangerous opposition.
Brighton
& Hove Rockets managed to find their early
form and although they were beginning to look
tired and carrying a couple of injuries they had
enough in the tank to edge past their Polish opposition.
Matt Pell was the goal-scoring hero scoring twice
(his fourth and fifth of the tournament) whilst
Lzerwiec got on the scoresheet for Barbakan. A
2-1 victory and Brighton & Hove Rockets had
made the final.
Borussia
Dorchmen lost their first two games before picking
up a maximum 9 points from their final 3 games.
Once the hangover had subsided they began to show
their true form and were looking the strongest
of the four teams remaining. Having eliminated
DHL Prague Red in Group B, they now found themselves
up against DHL Prague Blue who would be looking
for revenge for their ‘Red' counterparts.
Just
like the Dorchmen, DHL Prague Blue had struggled
early on with 1 point from their first three games
before winning their last two games to go through.
These were the two form teams in the Plate and
a tight game was expected.
A
tight game is what we got too. Steve Guppy opened
the scoring before Eric Walker of DHL found the
perfect time to open his tournament account to
level the scores. At 1-1 the game was perfectly
poised. There would be just one more goal in this
match to determine who would meet the Brighton
& Hove Rockets in the Final. The decisive
strike came from the boot of Steve Wilson. Borussia
Dorchmen had done it, a 2-1 win and the Plate
Final awaited them. |
