All
six teams, in theory, had an opportunity to progress
going into the final round of games. So, what
was to decide going into the fifth and final fixture?
Brighton
& Hove Rockets:
A win or draw would guarantee them as Group A
winners. A defeat, combined with an Atlantic Star
win and a shift in goal difference of more than
2 goals, would see them slip back into the Plate
on goal difference.
Complex:
A win would see them crowned Group A
winners. A draw and an Atlantic Star win by 5
goals or more would see them in the Plate. A defeat
would mean they qualify for the Plate provided
Atlantic Star failed to win.
Atlantic
Star: Could still
qualify for the Cup if they win and improve their
goal difference (how much would depend upon the
result between Complex v Brighton & Hove Rockets).
A draw would guarantee a place in the Plate. A
defeat, combined with a DHL Prague win and a Love
Generation win would mean elimination.
Love
Generation:
A win would guarantee a place in the Plate. A
draw or defeat would mean that DHL Prague Blue
would have to better their result to knock them
out. A defeat and an Azmot win would also do this.
DHL
Prague Blue:
A win would guarantee Plate qualification and
a defeat would guarantee elimination. A draw would
be enough if Love Generation lose.
Azmot:
A defeat or draw would be no good at
all. A win, combined with a defeat for the Love
Generation, would see Azmot climb into the Plate
qualification places.
So
now we know what the teams needed to do, lets
see how it all unfolded. First up was Atlantic
Star versus the Love Generation. Atlantic Star
had been a little bit unpredictable so far and
it was going to be interesting to see which team
turned up for this vital last game. Unfortunately
for the Love Generation it was the good side of
Atlantic Star that took the field against them.
The game saw 7 goals and Atlantic Star benefitted
from six of them – a Mark Brereton hat-trick the
highlight, a tournament first for Daniel Ellis,
a goal from John Sweeton and an own goal helped
them through to a 6-1 win. James Burton scored
what would prove to be The Love Generation's last
goal in the competition. Atlantic Star had got
their win and improved their goal-difference so
were odds on to make the Cup now with Complex
versus Brighton & Hove Rockets still to play.
As
the Love Generation were faltering on Pitch A,
DHL Prague Blue were beginning to realize as they
played on Pitch C that a draw would probably be
enough for them to make the Plate. Not taking
any chances though they went event better and
secured all 3 points against Azmot. The hero of
this final game for the Czechs was the Spaniard
in their ranks – Pablo Fernandez. He scored all
three goals in the game which ensured a 3-1 victory
and Plate qualification.
Azmot
had started brightly competing well but with a
couple of injuries in their squad found their
final two games a bridge too far. Azmot had a
great day though and have promised to have another
go in 2010.
Due
to Atlantic Star's victory and, now, superior
goal difference a win would only be good enough
for Complex. Brighton & Hove Rockets would
qualify for the Cup as long as they avoided defeat.
It started well for Brighton & Hove when Matt
Pell put them 1-0 up. The goal, proving the tension
of the occasion, started a bust up in the Complex
defence with defender and goalkeeper coming to
blows. Complex seemed to be in disarray but managed
to get into half-time just the one goal behind.
The
second half did not start much better but slowly
the Polish team worked their way back into the
game. Stanislaw Derszniak then got Complex back
on level terms at 1-1. As the game drew on and
minutes ticked away it looked more and more like
this game would finish in a draw. The Poles had
got themselves together now though and were pushing
for the win. With just a minute to go they produced
the decisive moment as Stanislaw Derszniak scored
his second of the game and 7th of the tournament
to jump them from 3rd to 1st whilst Brighton &
Hove Rockets saw their position move in the opposite
direction. The referee's final whistle blew and
Complex had done it – a place in the Cup was theirs.
Commiserations
to Brighton & Hove Rockets but their day was
not over as they had the afternoon Plate competition
to look forward to.
