Group D got underway on the showpiece pitch of the 2011 Barcelona Fives – Pitch D. Sesimbassa of Spain came up against Bristol Bridge. Sesimbassa were making their 2 nd eurofootballfives.com appearance. In June 2010 they narrowly missed out on the Cup by goal difference in their group and went on to reach the Plate Final where they lost 2-1 to Warranty Direct. Bristol Bridge's last tour was at the 2010 Krakow Trophy where they finished second in their group before bowing out at the quarter-finals stage to the eventual winners, Polish team Hutnik. It was a little bit of déjà vu for Bristol Bridge who also competed in the 2008 Barca Fives when they also finished 2 nd in their group before going out in the Cup Quarter-Finals. Will it be third time lucky to go beyond this stage at this year's event?

With similar pedigree in previous tournaments perhaps it was no surprise that we witnessed a tight encounter. It was an encounter where goalkeepers Andreu Xufre and Andy Fellows came out on top as the game finished 0-0.

Next up were debutants Bede FC versus Your Mum's Athletic. Your Mum's Athletic played in the 2010 Algarve Open reaching the Plate Semi-Finals where they lost to winners Vodafone FC. At half-time we were still looking for our first goals in Group D – perhaps this Group should go to penalties to decide it. One hungover watching player suggested we do just that and forget about the group games in between!

The group would be decided on the pitch though and the penalties idea was soon put to bed as Matthew Totman scored not once but twice to earn his team all 3 points with a 2-0 win. It was a solid debut for Bede FC who now knew what to expect in eurofootballfives competition.

Preston Youth began their campaign against Sesimbassa. We introduced them fully with their sister squad Preston OAPs in Group B so will not repeat ourselves here. Unlike Preston OAPs who got off to a winning start, Preston Youth found it difficult against their Spanish opponents as Joan Aguilar and then Marc Jorge gave them a 2-0 lead by the break.

The second half showed no let-up as Oriol Belles made it 3-0 and then Joan Domenech made it 4-0. It was a second clean sheet for Andreu Xufre, the Sesimbassa goalkeeper, and they moved up to the top of Group D. There was still plenty of time for Preston Youth to recover.

Bristol Bridge went into their second game looking to build on their draw knowing a win would see them go joint top with Sesimbassa. In their way stood Bede FC in 4th place and who had suffered opening game disappointment. Both teams were yet to score but both opened their accounts in the first half here through Peter Phillips and Dave Gatt.

In the second half we were to witness a 3rd and decisive goal and it was a second strike from Dave Gatt. His goals gave Bede FC their first win and the teams switched places in the table with Bede FC moving into 3rd place.

Your Mum's Athletic were looking to make it two wins out of two when they met Preston Youth who were looking to avoid two defeats out of two. Your Mum's Athletic shaded the opening period and the teams turned round with Your Mum's leading 2-1.

A repeat in the second half saw Your Mum's Athletic complete a solid 4-2 win. The game saw Matthew Totman claim a hat-trick to take his personal contribution to 5 goals in two games – something that Preston OAPs Chris Pye would be keeping an eye on! The other Your Mum's Athletic goal was scored by Pete Andrews. These strikes outgunned a brace from Ian Parry for Preston Youth. Your Mum's Athletic moved up to top spot.
