Equipo A (Spa)

The 2011 Barcelona Fives Final would see Rapid Bosco Navas play Equipo A. Who was going to triumph? Let's have a look at their records;

Rapid Bosco Navas

Including today's games thus far Rapid Bosco Navas had an impressive eurofootballfives record of:

Played 27, Won 15, Drawn 7, Lost 5.

They had scored 45 goals and conceded just 20.

They had qualified for the Cup on every occasion winning in 2008 and with 2 Quarter-Finals and 1 Semi-Final thrown in. Two of their 3 exits had come in penalty shoot-outs so they were a tough team to beat.

Equipo A

Equipo A had played in 3 tournaments including today and claimed the following record:

Played 17, Won 9, Drawn 2, Lost 6.

They had scored 55 goals and conceded just 34.

They had won the 2009 Barca Fives Plate, failed to qualify in 2010 and had now reached their first Cup Final. Although similar win ratios and goal averages we must point out that Equipo A had competed in the Plate rather than the Cup in previous knock-out phases.

Looking at the 2 records then Rapid Bosco Navas would be favourites. However, they have generally had a consistent line up whereas Equipo A's squad has been much changed year-to-year. Their team this year looked the strongest yet and was certainly stronger than their record suggested. In reality, we would not really like to pick a winner.

Rapid Bosco Navas were looking to become the first team to win two tournaments in the same destination and Equipo A were looking to become the first team to win a Cup and a Plate Final in Barcelona (Rigford Seahawks had previously managed this winning the 2009 Krakow Trophy and 2009 Prague Trophy Plate).

This final had some build-up and with the spectators lining the pitch the match got underway with both teams sparring for long periods of the game. Whilst both showed attacking intent the defences repelled the opposition advances. We arrived at half-time level, 0-0.

It would be worth pointing out here that 4 out of the last 5 Cup knock-out games involving Rapid Bosco Navas had ended in a draw requiring penalties. You could see why as they were solid at the back despite the attacking talent of Equipo A up front who had already scored 28 goals in 6 games this tournament. Up front Rapid had their moments but a goal looked elusive.

It is often said that in tight games like this it takes a moment of brilliance or a mistake to settle the tie. In this final it was a mixture of both. As the sands of time were running out Ricart Cortinas played a tired pass across the defence in between defender and goalkeeper and quick as a flash Marc Cheucos pounced and finished with superb accuracy.

The goal not only sealed glory for Equipo A but on a personal level it was a goal that earned Marc Cheucos the honour of being 2011 Barcelona Fives top goalscorer.

Our commiserations go to Rapid Bosco Navas for coming so close to a second title and losing it in such a tragic way. We congratulate Equipo A on a first Barcelona Fives title and we are sure it may not be their last!

We send our congratulations to all the teams who participated in what was a great day's competition. The tournament had everything and we look forward to seeing you all again very soon.
