With
5 games under their belts, the 2009 Barca Fives
would represent game 6 for each of Hawks
and Equipo A. It
would take one last effort and one final push
to collect the Plate Trophy and winners medals.
If
you were to pick a favourite you would probably
go for Hawks who had won 4 games out of 5 so far
with their only defeat to defending champions
Rapid Bosco Navas in the group stage. Equipo A
could not be counted out as they boasted 3 wins,
1 draw and just the 1 defeat to 2008 Prague Masters
winners, 2009 Prague Masters runners-up and 2009
Barca Fives finalists - Goldsmith Williams. They
also boasted 14 goals in their last two games
and the tournament's current top goalscorer Xavi
Moya. Probably best not to stake your mortgage
on the outcome of this game!
The
game was every bit as close as we expected with
both teams defences on top. Neither side could
find that initial breakthrough and give their
team an advantage. We reached half-time with both
teams locked at 0-0. We were treated to goals
in the second half though and the hero of the
hour was a Spaniard of British parentage playing
for Equipo A, Jack Foorde. He scored twice which
swung the game in favour of Equipo A and which
ultimately won the Plate for his team. Hawks scored
through Daniel Cooke which kept them in the hunt
right until the final whistle but when the whistle
blew the final score was 2-1. Equipo A of Spain
were crowned Barca Fives Plate champions bringing
the title back to the home nation from DHL Prague
Red.
Our
congratulations to Equipo
A on a fine victory in the Plate and our
commiserations to Hawks who we are sure will pick
up glory of their own in future eurofootballfives.com
tournaments.
On
the subject of glory, Xavi
Moya of Equipo A finished as top goalscorer
in the tournament with ten goals. He is only the
second player in 19 tournaments to win this award
to come from a team in the Plate competition.
A great achievement.
